We are looking for a Maintenance Assistant with an enthusiastic and positive attitude to problem solving, to join our estates and facilities team at The Prince of Wales Hospice, West Yorkshire.

To work under the supervision of the Maintenance Technician and Support Services Manager, undertaking basic maintenance tasks, to provide a comprehensive maintenance service across the Hospice estate, including our 10 retail outlets, ensuring a professional and efficient service is maintained for all patients, public and staff.

You should hold an NVQ level 2 (or equivalent experience) in a recognised craft e.g. joinery, plumbing, electrics and have a good general knowledge of Health and Safety

Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team are essential and previous experience of working in a care sector would be desirable. There will be a requirement for flexibility in terms of ensuring adequate maintenance cover during periods of annual leave within the team.

This role requires a DBS check. Following an initial DBS check, successful recruits will be required to subscribe to the DBS update service at their own cost (currently £16 annual payment)

Main duties of the job

Main purpose of job: To work under the supervision of the Maintenance Technician and Facilities Manager, undertaking basic maintenance tasks, in order to provide a comprehensive maintenance service across the Hospice estate, including our 10 retail outlets, ensuring a professional and efficient service is maintained for all patients, public and staff.

KEY OUTCOMES:

General Duties and Responsibilities

Carry out basic carpentry works by fixing furniture, doors, locks, pictures, desk etc

Carry out basic repairs to electrical items eg. changing light bulbs

Carry out basic repairs to plumbing appliances e.g. including sinks, toilets and showers

To ensure the external grounds are clean, tidy and hazard free.

To undertake the scheduled cleaning of external windows, doors, gutters and signage.

To undertake PAT testing of electrical items as directed (training will be provided)

Carry out elements of the planned preventative maintenance program as instructed e.g. weekly flushing of outlets, weekly vehicle check etc

To undertake basic decoration throughout the Hospice and associated buildings and grounds as directed.

To ensure the waste disposal areas and boiler room are kept clean and tidy

To set up meeting rooms and facilitate office moves as required

Attend to service desk requests promptly whist adhering to the reporting procedures and staying within boundaries of own expertise ensuring accurate keeping of records of work requested and completed by the use of the electronic sentinel system.

To undertake ad hoc deliveries / collections as dictated by the needs of the organisation.

To assist and co-operate with all reasonable staff requests for assistance and undertake any other duties as directed.

To ensure that all customers are satisfied with our service by being friendly and helpful at all times

All employees are required to abide by the Health and Safety at Work Act, attend annual mandatory training sessions and ensure they comply with Hospice policies and procedures at all times;

Employees must demonstrate commitment to their own personal development and are required to make a positive contribution to fundraising and raising the profile of the Hospice;

EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

Essential

  • Experience of hands on general maintenance including basic joinery and plumbing skills
  • Good organisational and time management skills.
  • Able to prioritize and problem solve.
  • Ability to follow instructions both verbal and written.
  • Good communication skills to build and maintain good working relationships with staff, volunteers, contractors and visitors
  • Full driving licence
  • Basic IT skills

Desirable

  • Experience of working in an health care environment

KNOWLEDGE

Essential

  • Good general knowledge of main trades e.g. electrical, plumbing, joinery, decorating
  • Good knowledge of Health and Safety
