About the job role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Maintenance Multi-Skilled Engineer in our Facilities team at St Josephs Hospice. We are looking for someone who has experience in plumbing, mechanical and electrical working in a palliative care / clinical environment.

The role will provide support to the team and carry out repairs to mechanical and plumbing services and equipment, e.g. replacement of filters in ventilation systems, check tensions of drive belts, record details of works, materials and time on a docket or our helpdesk system. The role will also support with programmed planned maintenance works to mechanical and plumbing services such as checking temperature of water taps and outlets, descaling showerheads, following prescribed instructions to defined standards, record actions and/or findings using a formal written report system and provide information to the Head of Facilities on replacement parts and spares to enable orders to be raised.

Main duties of the job

About you

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Either BTEC National Certificate (HNC Electronic Engineering). Or Completion of at least 4yr apprenticeship of Practical and Theoretical Training as an Electronic Technician or equivalent
  • Good knowledge of plumbing materials sufficient to be able to maintain and discuss the maintenance needs of water systems i.e. pump and pipe sizes and their uses
  • Good knowledge on health and Safety risk assessment and relevant Health and Safety legislation.

Job title : Maintenance Multi-Skilled Engineer

Responsible to : Maintenance Supervisor

Responsible for : The role of the Maintenance Mechanical Engineer is concerned with keeping the internal building services in good working order and undertaking the minor maintenance, repair and installation of electrical, mechanical and plumbing services and equipment at the Hospice, as directed by the Head of Facilities /Maintenance Supervisor.

Basic function

The post holder will assist maintenance colleagues to carry out their duties.

This role involves working with colleagues in a small maintenance team led by the Head of Facilities.

Organisational context

St Josephs Hospice was founded in 1905 by the Religious Sisters of Charity who retain an interest in the oversight of the Hospice. The Hospice is working to achieve Vision 2024, which has five key strands: patients, enterprise, estates, funding and fundraising, and human resources. Discretion to act

As the philosophy of St Josephs Hospice is based on a multidisciplinary approach, the Maintenance Mechanical/Electrical engineer is expected to comply with this concept in the performance of his/her duties and responsibilities.

Key accountabilities

1. Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical Duties

1.1 Carry out repairs to mechanical and plumbing services and equipment, e.g. replacement of filters in ventilation systems, check tensions of drive belts, TV on ward, ports on nurses call systems etc and record details of works, materials and time on a docket, report system or computer terminal, as directed.

1.2 Carry out programmed planned maintenance works to mechanical and plumbing services, e.g. checking temperature of water taps and outlets, descaling showerheads etc following prescribed instructions to defined standards; record actions and/or findings using a formal written report system.

1.3 Carry out minor electrical/Mechanical repairs, installation and testing such as changing plugs, replacing lamps, light fittings and wall sockets, Installing circulation pups /valves.

1.4 Record/monitor energy/fuel/water consumption/temperatures and associated information as directed.

1.5 Carry out minor mechanical and plumbing installation works, e.g. toilet bowls and wash hand basins, including the commissioning and testing of equipment in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations and relevant standards/codes of practice.

1.6 Provide information to the Head of Facilities/Maintenance Supervisor on replacement parts and spares, to enable orders to be raised.

1.7 Inspect equipment on delivery/installation, when requested, and advise of any omissions or defects.

1.8 Maintain power tools and test workshop equipment and ensure the workshop is kept in good order at all times.

1.9 Implements policies and where necessary advises of changes to the Head of Facilities /Maintenance Supervisor.

2. Related Construction Trades Tasks

2.1 Perform a basic range of work in other construction trades in accordance with the Hospice needs, e.g. assist in the erection and dismantling of simple platforms, ladders, trestles, stagings etc.

2.2 Assist the Carpenter to construct simple paths in timber formwork to slab edging, paths and steps mixing, placing, compacting and protection of concrete and hard landscaping.

2.3 Assist maintenance colleagues with minor reactive remedial works, safe use tools etc.

2.4 Work with maintenance colleagues and external contractors at the Hospice and provide information or assistance to these persons when requested, e.g. identify to specialist contractors the location of stop valves and electrical isolation switches etc.

3. Other Work Tasks

3.1 Test weekly and record performance of blood fridge.

3.2 Monitor and inspect all boiler rooms including the steam boiler.

3.3 Maintain the general heating and hot water.

3.4 Work within a planned maintenance programed.

3.5 System pump sets/stations/boosted water and pressurisation units and domestic water systems

3.6 General plant room checks

3.7 Help in the Management of L8 water systems.

3.8 Attend to contractors in the absence of the Head of Facilities or Maintenance Supervisor.

3.9 For example, provide regular reliable line management support sufficient to enable staff to give their best and develop their potential as fully as possible.
