An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic person to join the central laboratory of the Yorkshire and North East Genomic Laboratory Hub. The role will be based within the Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (HMDS), St James Hospital, Leeds with a focus on haemato-oncology molecular work.

The department is part of a NHS Genomics Network of Excellence doing work to optimise the genomic investigations offered to patients with lymphoma. This fixed term role would be suitable for candidates looking for experience in a research-related role which will offer the opportunity to be part of this exciting project to improve patient outcomes.

This is an opportunity to become part of a highly successful department with extensive facilities, high levels of scientific expertise and a national/international reputation for developments of assays/methodologies within a clinical trial/R&D setting which are then translated into routine practice.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of this role is to contribute to the development and delivery of a high-quality diagnostic service. The successful candidate will be required to deliver a broad range of complex and specialised scientific work from raw data requiring highly skilled performance. There will be a relatively high level of individual responsibility and freedom to act applied to a variety of situations with or without scientific/technical support.

Applicants should have previous experience of working in a laboratory environment and previous work in a molecular laboratory technical post is highly desirable.

HMDS provides a specialist service for the diagnosis of blood cancers and is part of the central laboratory for the Yorkshire and North East Genomic Laboratory Hub. The laboratory is the largest of its type in the United Kingdom with a high throughput of specimens including peripheral blood, bone marrow and tissue biopsies. The department also has a strong research programme and there will also be opportunity to be involved in projects related to research and clinical trials. Job responsibilities

JOB PURPOSE

Undertake defined technical and administrative tasks to assist in the delivery of a safe, effective and efficient service provided by HMDS.

Specific duties depend on the section in which the member of staff is working

Reporting to and being supervised and directed by scientists in the department.

Collaborating with other members of the section, department or hospital to help achieve an effective and reliable service.

3. JOB DIMENSIONS

The post holder will undertake the scientific duties and responsibilities of a technical support worker in the provision of an effective and high quality service to patients. He/She will be expected to work with a degree of autonomy for patient testing within the overall responsibility of the Service Manager, Head of Department and section leads. He/She will participate in continuing training to acquire, improve and apply the requisite skills and expertise for the post and also aid senior biomedical scientists and clinical scientists in the training and supervision of new staff members. The postholder will be required to work in different sections of the laboratory by rotation and may be required to take special responsibility for specialised areas of work or nominated departmental duties. Specific duties will depend on the section to which the postholder is allocated.

5. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Must hold a degree in biomedical / biological sciences or other equivalent qualification.

Have knowledge and understanding of basic clinical biochemistry / immunology including established and emerging techniques for the measurement of clinically important analytes.

You will develop your competencies, skills and knowledge in the speciality in which you are working through practical experience, in house training and attendance at any courses deemed necessary by the laboratory in order to carry out your duties.

Basic computer skills are essential to carry out this post.

To have a knowledge of the departmental test repertoire, analytical methods, quality assurance and problem solving.

To have a knowledge of departmental structure policies and procedures.
