Job summary
This is first of its kind, specialist Microsurgery Fellowship including Hypospadias surgery, in the UK.
The successful candidate will take part in regular operating sessions involving Microsurgical reconstructions (Breast / Head and Neck / Lower Limb Trauma) as well as Hypospadias surgery, which requires comparable skill set.
Working within the Plastic Surgery Department at Royal Preston Hospital, this post offers a unique skill set which differs from that of regular surgical skills. We are looking for someone with previous experience in this area to join the Team.
This is a 12-month Fixed Term post.
Main duties of the job
The working week will include regular operating sessions, outpatients clinics, in patient management and participating in weekly Departmental teaching sessions. Morbidity and mortality / Audit meetings are held once a month.
Clinical:
- Managing New and Follow up patients in weekly
- Care of in-patients - pre and post operative periods.
- Daily ward rounds in adult and children's
- Taking part in designated operating lists - working alongside the Consultant at a senior level and supporting Junior
- On-call cover (1 in 14 rota) for General Plastic surgery / Hand trauma
Administrative:
- Clinical documentation / Managing patient related correspondence
- Involvement in Quality improvement
- You will be expected to play a full part in Departmental Morbidity & Mortality / Audit meetings and clinical governance

Undergraduate medical student teaching has commenced in 2003. The Plastic Surgery Directorate has active links with the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) with trainees undertaking laboratory research at the University. Considerable opportunities exist for research and development, which are integral to teaching hospital status.
Clinical research is actively encouraged. Support to study leave and medical meetings can be arranged. It is expected that the post holder will generate some research / publications from this Fellowship.

Essential
- Meets professional health requirements in line with GMC Standards/ Good Medical Practice (GMC check to confirm)
Qualifications
Essential
- Full GMC Registration and License to Practice
- MBBS or equivalent
- Post graduate Training in Plastic Surgery of at least 4 years
Desirable
- MRCS or equivalent
- ST7/ 8 (Plastic Surgery)
- Post CCT / FRCS Plastic Surgery or equivalent
- Post Graduate Training
Experience and Skills
Essential
- Recognised Plastic Surgery training or equivalent.
- Experience of working independently whilst operating on local anaesthetic patients.
- Previous experience in Microvascular Surgery
Desirable
- Previous experience in independent or supervised Microsurgical work
- Involvement in audit
- Interest / previous experience within Hypospadias Surgery/ Paediatric Plastic Surgery
Personal
Essential
- Proven effective communication skills (with examples).
- Works well within a multidisciplinary environment.
- Good organisation skills (with examples).
Desirable
- Ability to teach / train others.
- Attending Training the Trainer course or equivalent
