Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for dynamic and motivated doctors to join our Plastic Surgery Department for an initial fixed term of 6-month. The post holder may be offered an extension provided satisfactory progress based on research output, consultant feedback and documented progress on ISCP portfolio.

During the appointment the Research Fellows will undertake both clinical and research work. The post holders will be required to develop clinical audit and research projects ultimately aiming for national and international presentations and publications.

Main duties of the job

The main clinical duties of the post will include:

Work at registrar level during the clinical part of this post.

The post holder will be assigned to one of 13 consultants as a designated educational and clinical supervisor; however the role will also be closely supervised by the academic lead.

Working within a wider multidisciplinary team and will have access to IT and library services.

On-call commitment of 1:8 and will be expected to cover acute trauma lists, theatre lists and clinics.

Provision of care with responsibility for the management of patients with acute and chronic conditions including complex cases

Referral of patients to other specialities as appropriate

Out-patient activities/clinics

Involvement in specialty and cross-specialty multi-disciplinary teams and meetings

Involvement in relevant administration duties

Teaching and supervision of resident medical staff and other clinicians as appropriate

Active involvement in audit and clinical governance including service improvement activities

These posts offer an exciting opportunity for the post holders to combine clinical and academic roles and are aimed at doctors who are passionate about plastic surgery and wish to step up to registrar level clinical duties and build their portfolios for ST3 applications.

These posts are not a recognised UK training post. Nevertheless, our MYDoc doctors will have a named supervisor and be supported in undertaking scheduled educational opportunities to consolidate and develop their portfolios, with certificated outcomes to support career progression through deanery or other routes.

An Introduction to the Division/Specialty

An opportunity has arisen for two dynamic and motivated doctors to join our Plastic Surgery Department. The post holders may be offered an extension provided satisfactory progress based on research output, consultant feedback and documented progress on ISCP portfolio.

The post holders will be expected to divide their working time equally between research and clinical duties. We will endeavour to tailor the post to allow necessary competences, required for national selection at ST3 level, to be achieved.

The department of Burns and Plastic Surgery at Pinderfields Hospital provides a wide range of elective and 24-hour emergency services to a population of approximately 500,000, drawn from Wakefield, Dewsbury, Pontefract, and surrounding areas.

The Plastic surgery department, regional burns centre for adults and paediatric burns unit are situated on the Pinderfields site with outpatient and day-case services at Pontefract Hospital and Dewsbury Hospital. We also have dedicated hand therapy services at all three hospital sites and plastic surgery dressings clinic at Pinderfields Hospital. Our adult burns, general plastic surgery ward, hand therapy unit and plastic surgery dressings clinic are all co-located on the same floor.

Currently we have a team of 13 full-time consultants and 2 part-time consultants. We have 2 new consultants starting this year. Our resident staff include: 3 FY2, 1 Deanery CST, 6 trust rotational CST, 5 NTN, 1 trust grade registrar and 2 research registrars. We also have senior post FRCS hand fellow. We have dedicated extended role hand therapists, dermatology and breast care nurse specialists.

Our spheres of interest include hand surgery, breast reconstruction, skin cancer, paediatric plastic surgery, perineal reconstruction and acute and reconstructive surgery for burns.

Hand Surgery

  • Hand trauma including soft tissue injury and fracture fixation
  • Dupuytrens
  • Nerve compression syndromes
  • Osteo and Rheumatoid arthritis of the hand and wrist.

Congenital (Paediatric) Plastic Surgery

  • Congenital ear deformities including prominent ears
  • Congenital skin lesions

Skin cancer

  • Non-melanoma skin cancer (eg BCC, SCC, others)
  • Melanoma

Breast Surgery

  • Breast reduction
  • Gynaecomastia
  • Mastopexy
  • Nipple tattooing
  • Breast asymmetry
  • Breast reconstruction including ADM, LD flaps and DIEP flaps and symmetrising procedures

Other Cross-Specialty Surgery

  • Pressure sores
  • Perineal reconstruction
  • Lower limb reconstruction

Our burns service serves a population of approximately 3.5 million people across West, North and East Yorkshire, and North Lincolnshire. Our service is accessed by 19 emergency departments, in an area of around 3,000 square miles.

We treat over 180 adult and 200 paediatric in-patients burns injuries every year. In addition, we provide out-patient and outreach services to over 1000 patients annually. We have a team of burns specialist staff including surgeons, anaesthetists, microbiologists, dieticians, psychologists, outreach sisters, play, occupational and physiotherapists. We have Burns MDT meetings every Monday and Friday mornings. Our MDT scar clinics take place at Pinderfields Hospital and are a combination face to face and telemedicine clinics.

We are now the only plastic surgery department in the region to provide burns centre care for adults. We are also responsible for providing our regional NTN specialist registrars with the required level of burns experience and training.

We treat both elective and acute hand pathology in Mid-Yorkshire. We manage a high-volume of hand fractures. We have 10-11 dedicated consultant delivered hand trauma lists a week, providing an excellent opportunity for trainees to receive the highest quality of operative hand surgery training. We hold a hand surgery MDT every six weeks which is attended by all therapy staff, hand consultants and trainees.

We also have a day-time trauma consultant of the week who supports a full resident trauma on call team made up of and FY2 or CT trainee and an on call registrar. We have a separate weekday, daytime burns on call team. We have a dedicated plastic surgery ambulatory assessment unit with a treatment room for minor hand trauma procedures.
