Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join a part of our Paediatric team at SouthWarwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust to cover maternity leave for 12 months. The Paediatric Diabetes team works with acute inpatients, within our outpatient clinics as well as undertaking work with schools and families in the community to support children and young people both newly diagnosed and for those requiring review and support to manage Diabetes as a condition.

The Paediatric Diabetes Team are looking for a band 6 Paediatric DiabetesSpecialist Nurse to join the team along with our Paediatric Diabetes Leadconsultant and Band 7 PDSN. You will be expected to work alongside othermembers of the team including the medical team and Paediatric Nursing staff, and adult Diabetes team to support children, young people and their families with their diabetes management.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work within the children's diabetes team based in Secondary Care. The Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse will act as a clinical expert and professional resource to the multi-professional team, families and carers. The post holder will provide specialist advice with their clinical area, both in the hospital and community. The post holder will participate in the development of teaching packages/training programmes for nurses and other health care professionals.

Job responsibilities

To participate in the promotion of child and family centred care and establish and maintain a supportive relationship with the child and their family/carer during the period of treatment and care within the speciality. Ensuring that the rights, dignity and confidentiality to the child are protected at all times.

To demonstrate appropriate expert practise and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for the child, family and carer.

To participate and assist with the multi-disciplinary team in resolving patient problems as required and reflecting the wishes of the child and their family.

To work to the agreed child protection policies, and to participate in the child case conferences.

To support, mentor and supervise student nurses, medical students and other health care professionals.

To support and enable children and families/carers to make informed decisions relating to their treatment and management.

To provide high quality clinical care and support the clinical development of Paediatric Diabetes specialist service by ensuring the use of evidence based practice and clinical standards within the childrens diabetes service.

To provide professional support and clinical guidance to nursing staff and other staff from other agencies.

To participate in the implementation of new methods and practices in relation to the care of children and adolescents with diabetes within the agreed protocols.

To contribute to audit and research activities within the specialist unit and in collaboration with colleagues.

To attend outpatient clinics, co-ordinate treatment and individualised nursing care and health education.

To promote and deliver high standards of care at all times, which utilises research-based evidence

To participate in education and training programmes and develop training packages as required.

To demonstrate continuous evaluation of own practice and make changes where appropriate within the defined speciality.

Managerial

Ensure delivery of care is in accordance with Trust policies, procedures and guidelines.

Monitor the needs of client group in order to formulate the strategic and operational development of the service for the children and young people with diabetes.

To participate in the implementation of change in response to clinical and organisational demands and inform the manager of concerns and deficiencies that may affect patient care.

Report and record untoward incidents and complaints in line with the Trust policy.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • First Level RSCN
  • Teaching and assessing qualification
  • Diploma/Degree in health related subject.
  • Paediatric / Adult diabetes course

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum of 2 years band 5 experience in Paediatrics

Desirable

  • Minimum of 12 months experience at band 5 in paediatric diabetes

Skills

Essential

  • Able initiate and deliver high quality nursing care to diabetic children
  • Can plan, delegate and supervise others
  • Able to manage clinical area effectively
  • Able to assist to manage resources within a budget
  • Aware of current NHS issues and priorities
