The KEMH is the principal healthcare facility in the Falkland Islands which alongside of primary care, also provides a broad range of elective & emergency secondary care services to a resident population of about 3700 people, (plus short-term residents and visitors)
We are looking to employ a Pharmacist to join our team to provide quality care to the residents and visitors of the Falkland Islands.
If you are an enthusiastic Pharmacist with General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) registration or equivalent professional registering body who has experience of working in the NHS & looking for a new challenge, to work independently within a small team and participate in a 24 hour on-call rota, we would like to hear from you.

Main duties of the job
This position requires an experienced Pharmacist, on a two-to-four-year contract to join two Pharmacy Technicians and a Pharmacy Assistant to provide this key service to the community in the Falkland Islands.
This role involves, but is not limited to, managing the day to day running of the pharmacy department and when necessary, undertaking core dispensary-based tasks as well as developing and maintaining the hospital drug formulary.
You would take a lead role in running the smoking cessation clinic and other primary health clinics, according to the needs of the community and personal skills levels.

The Health and Social Services Directorate, Falkland Islands provides emergency, primary, secondary and community healthcare as well as social services assistance, support, and advice. Most health services are based at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) which is the Islands only hospital and is based in the capital Stanley. We serve the local community of about 3,700 residents, short-term residents and visitors.

Job responsibilities
- Manage the day to day running of the pharmacy department. Be prepared, when necessary, to undertake core dispensary-based tasks including the generation of repeat prescriptions, dispensing, OTC sales, stock ordering and control.
- Maintain accurate patient medication records using the hospital computer system.
- Attend hospital ward rounds as required to advise clinicians on inpatient medication issues.
- Assist the secondary care team with discharge planning.
- Ensure that safe and effective prescribing is carried out by clinicians. Provide advice to clinicians on all aspects of medication, including information about side effects, drug interactions and the suitability of certain drugs for patients with particular health conditions.
- Develop and maintain the hospital drug formulary, chairing the formulary committee and working in collaboration with clinical colleagues. Subsequently ensure evidence-based, cost effective prescribing practices are followed by monitoring compliance with the formulary.
- Develop and maintain pharmacy and dispensary protocols, guidelines and standard operating procedures. Train members of the team in their use.
- Provide counselling to patients inpatient and outpatient taking prescribed medication, in order to maximise concordance.
- Participate in clinical governance and risk management activities, including input into prescribing audits, clinical guideline development. Participate in multi-disciplinary committees within the organisation.
- Take the lead role in running the smoking cessation clinic and other primary health clinics, according to the needs of the community and personal skill levels. Clinics may include emergency hormonal contraception, basic medication reviews etc.
- Comply with the Falkland Island legislative and regulatory framework and hospital departmental policies and procedures.
- Take responsibility for own continuing professional development, ensuring it meets the minimum requirements of the General Pharmaceutical Council or equivalent professional registering body.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to the post as required by the Director of Health and Social Services, the Hospital Manager or the Chief Medical Officer.

Qualifications
Essential
- Master of Pharmacy Degree or equivalent
- Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) or equivalent professional registering body
Desirable
- Further relevant postgraduate qualifications
Experience
Essential
- A minimum of three years post-registration experience
- Experience of working effectively within a multi-disciplinary team
- Computer literate with a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word
- Knowledge and experience of stock control
- The ability to communicate clearly, both in writing and verbally with other professionals and members of the public
- Good time management and prioritisation skills
Desirable
- Experience of working in hospital and community pharmacy
- Experience in the development and implementation of formularies/protocols/guidelines/patient group directions and standard operating procedures
- Experience in audit and clinical governance
- Experience in aseptic dispensing
- Experience of running a smoking cessation clinic and providing POMs under a patient group direction
