Job summary

The post holder is required :o To assemble and dispense in-patient, outpatient and take home medication and to process controlled drug requisitions, following standard dispensary operating procedures. All assembling and dispensing work is checked.o To participate in the ward based medicines management service, assessing patients own medicines, and organising supplies.o To support the Pharmacy Logistics Service in providing safe, effective and efficient pharmacy purchasing and distribution services.o To work within Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and be guided by professional good practice guidelines.o To work as part of a team and also work independently, using own initiative to deal with routine enquiries e.g. availability and supply of medicines to wards, or patients, referring to the Pharmacy Technician or a Pharmacist if necessary.

Main duties of the job

Check medicine supplies in patient's locker against their current prescription chart, assessing the need for further supplies and recording them on the dispensing order form once clinically checked by the Pharmacist, highlighting to the Pharmacist any new items which need checking.

Assess patients' own medication, determine suitability for use during admission, initiating supplies from Pharmacy only when appropriate.

Obtain consent from patients to use their own medicines.

Liaise with the Dispensary staff to ensure timely dispensing of critical time medicines. Highlight any issues with unavailable medicines to the Pharmacy Technician or Clinical Pharmacist.

Assemble "take home" prescriptions on Ward or in satellite pharmacy, dispensing any required items, checking for accuracy of labels, making any changes or additions as necessary and selecting the correct patient information leaflet/card(s).

Process Transfer of Medicines with patient to another hospital within BCU according to SOPs.

Ensure medicines are transferred with patients to new Ward on site.

Recycle stock supplies from locker to stock cupboard where appropriate.

Undertake ward controlled drugs stock checks in line with SOPs.

Review range and levels of ward stock medicines and carry out changes.

Maintain the security of medicines (including controlled drugs), when accessing ward stock and in-patient medicines lockers on wards in compliance with policies and procedures

  • NVQ L2 Pharmacy Services
  • Pharmacy / NHS experience

  • Good knowledge of drug stock management or stock control
