Main duties of the job
- To organise the day to day running of the department
- To provide portering and security service to all wards and departments by supervising and allocating jobs to the staff on duty.
- To provide high quality, responsive security service, promoting a pro security culture, tackling violence towards Trust staff, providing security of all NHS property and assets.
- To have a good working knowledge of the requirements of all wards and departments within the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust.
- To support and assist with all security incidents.
- To provide reports when required.

Job responsibilities
- To organise the day to day running of the department.
- The day-to-day supervision, discipline and general welfare of the Porters and Security Officers.
- To ensure that adequate staffing coverage always exists.
- To participate when requested in the interviewing and selection of staff.
- To be responsible for the training and induction of newly recruited portering and security staff, and to participate in their personal development, and identify training requirements; the training of security staff in better methods of dealing with conflict, aggression, and violence.
- To ensure staff deal with customers in a polite and effective manner, taking corrective action where necessary.
- To ensure that all staff attend mandatory training and book and complete training courses.

To cascade to all portering and security staff information concerning operational protocols of the department.
- Ordering stock items when required.
- To work in conjunction with the Deputy Facilities Manager for the arrangement of rotas and relief duties for absence, sickness, annual leave and training.
- Keeping completed records of all sickness absences and annual leave.
- Ensuring accurate up to date records, on the E-rostering system are kept of hours worked by staff.
- Assist with the review and updating of internal standard operating procedures (SOPs) including Emergency procedures and contingency plans.
- To deal and document with employee relation matters when required.
- To operate the base station to communicate with other porters and security staff, when relaying tasks, message, including all emergency.
- To ensure that when a deceased patient is transported from the ward they are treated with due respect.
- To record in a legible manner all ad hoc duties when allocating them.
- To keep accurate records of disposable consumables that porters distribute and relay to LSMS/Facilities Manager or their Deputy when an order has been placed.
- To ensure all documentation is completed, monitored and updated when required.
- Provide monthly updates to deputy facilities manager
- To complete and record in a comprehensive manner staff annual appraisals.
- To ensure all staff are competent in the safe handling of medical gases.
- Must hold a clean driving licence.

Deal with any reported problems with the vehicles, forwarding all reports to the Deputy Facilities Manager.
- Also responsible for booking taxis when needed and keeping clear concise records of requests for taxis especially the full name of the person who has authorised it.

When required: Undertake regular foot patrols of the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust in general and the Accident and Emergency Department to:

Prevent and Deter, violence and aggression, criminal activity against Trust property, staff, patients, and visitors

Report all security incidents/breaches and aggressive behaviour, physical assaults, thefts, insecure buildings, departments etc

Identify and report any fire hazards e.g., blocked fire exits escape routes to the fire lead at the trust.

Provide routing assistance and guidance to patients and visitors Training for all aspects of their role duties will be delivered in house.

A training programme exists in this hospital trust.

Attendance at all sessions is mandatory, these include moving & handling, resuscitation, infection control, clinical governance, fire training and Dealing with Conflict training.

Training and documenting in safe handling of medical gases and cascading as required.

Training and documenting in handling of liquid nitrogen and cascading as required.

Person Specification
Experience and Knowledge
Essential
- Understanding of leadership and ability to lead a team
- Dealing with the public in a customer facing role
- Good interpersonal skills and ability adapt approach to suit the needs of the person/situation
- Must have no criminal record
Desirable
- 2 years' experience within a hospital setting.
- Previous Security Service and CCTV experience
Qualification and Personal Training
Essential
- A good standard of education
- Accredited Security and dealing with conflict course
- Good knowledge of excel and word computer systems and Keyboard skills
Desirable
- NVQ Level 3 in Security and SIA supervision trained and licensed (equivalent or working towards)
Skills and Abilities
Essential
- Ability to prioritise departmental workload
- Have an awareness of Trust policies and guidelines
- Able to pass foundation PMVA course, and other related.
- Ability to work within a busy and demanding department
- Demonstrate good practice and have knowledge of Health and safety legislation.
- Excellent Communication skills
- Excellent mentoring and training skills
- Knowledge of emergency procedures for portering and security
- Ability to record information and provide comprehensive written statements and reports
- Numerical skills including the ability to calculate hours worked and resolve pay queries
