Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Practice Nurse to join The Bovey Tracey & Chudleigh Practice. This is a permanentposition of up to 36 hours per week. Salary is negotiable depending on experience.
Main duties of the job
The position will be well suited to an individual who has previous primary care nursing experience, with experience in minor illness, womens health and chronic disease management. The individual should be enthusiastic about providing high-quality patient service with strong communication and administrative skills.

We are a eight Partner rural training practice with eight salaried doctors. We have a varied and supportive clinical and administrative team, which includes two advanced nurse practitioners, four practice nurses, five healthcare assistants, a health and wellbeing coach, a social prescribing link worker, a full complement of medical administrators and a pharmacy team. We have a growing list size of 15,070 and operate from two purpose-built buildings.
Job responsibilities
Main responsibilities
Clinical Practice Nursing
Wound Management
Undertake uncomplicated dressings
Undertake suture removal
Undertake Doppler readings
Screening
Undertake screening including BP checks, height, weight, BMI & Urinalysis
Carry out Well Person Checks and New Patient Medicals
Undertake venepuncture, following training.
Health Promotion
Make basic assessment of needs of patient
Provide nuturional advice on Obesity, Raised Cholesterol, CHD and Diabetes
Measures and records BMI
Understand patients motivation to adapt their lifestyle
Offer lifestyle advice on smoking and exercise and refers as appropriate
Vaccinations & Immunisations
Administer injections under individual prescription or Patient Group Direction, following training.
Administer childhood immunisations under individual prescription of Patient Group Direction, following training.
Ensure safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs.
Ear Care
Undertake ear syringing, following training.
Advise patients about safe ear care.
Infection Control
Apply infection control measures within the Practice according to local and national guidelines. This includes:-
o Universal hygiene precautions.
o The collection and handling of laboratory specimens
o Segregation and disposal of waste materials
o Decontamination of instruments and clinical equipment
o Reporting and treatment of sharps injuries
o Dealing with blood and body fluid spillages
Assist patients and colleagues in adopting sound infection control measures.
Emergency Management
Is competent in anaphylaxis and resuscitation techniques.
Family Planning
Has a basic understanding of emergency contraception and refers patients as appropriate.
Advises on risk of pregnancy and has basic knowledge of contraception options, following training.
Womens Health
Has a working knowledge of the national and local Cervical Cytology and mammography screening programmes.
Can discuss breast self awareness, demonstrate self-breast examination and provide supporting literature to patients.
Mens Health
Can discuss and give basic advice on male health issues and provide supporting literature to patients.
Care and Programme Management
Diabetes
Has a basic understanding of diabetes
Assists in the diagnosis of diabetic patients and makes appropriate referrals
Supplies appropriate material for patient education
Is able to manage the emergency treatment of a diabetic patient with hypo/hyperglycaemic attack according to Practice Guidelines.
Respiratory Disease Management
Has a basic understanding of asthma care; its diagnosis, treatments and the principles of self-management.
Checks patients inhaler techniques and measure peak flow readings
Has a basic understanding of COPD treatment to support patients and make appropriate referrals.
Nebulise patients following assessment by GP/Senior Nurse.
Cardiovascular Disease
Has a basic understanding of the pathophysiology of the cardiovascular system.
Identify and advise patients on risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease i.e. BP, lipid, glucose monitoring, family history, smoking, diet and exercise.
Understands the basic management of patients with hypertension, angina, myocardial infarction and cerebro-vascular accident.
Clinical Practice Leadership
Assist in clinical audit and the setting and monitoring of standards of care.
Assist and teaches others in clinical setting, including unqualified staff.
Act as an assessor/mentor to other staff where necessary.
Works effectively in a team
Clinical Practice Development
Is aware of current research approaches to patient care and incorporates this in Practice
Has an understanding of the ethical dilemmas that impinge on general practice.
Support structures that are in place for the smooth running of the Practice.
Contribute to the efficient utilisation of the nursing resource.
Effective use of resources and stock control with an awareness of cost implications is required although no direct budgetary responsibility
