Job summary

A Practice Nurse plays a vital role in delivering high-quality patient care in a GP surgery. They support the primary care team in providing preventative care, treatment, and health education while working within agreed protocols and guidelines. The role requires clinical expertise, patient engagement, and collaboration with GPs, healthcare assistants, and other healthcare professionals.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide general nursing care including wound dressings, removal of sutures, and injections.
  • Administer childhood and adult vaccinations in line with NHS immunisation schedules.
  • Manage and review long-term conditions such as diabetes, asthma, COPD, and hypertension.
  • Conduct cervical cytology (smear tests) following NHS screening guidelines.
  • Perform health screenings and NHS health checks for eligible patients.
  • Provide family planning and sexual health advice, including contraception services.
  • Carry out ear irrigation, ECGs, and spirometry as required.
  • Support the management of infection control and clinical waste disposal.

    Job responsibilities

    The following are the core responsibilities of a practice nurse. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

    To identify, manage and support patients at risk of developing long term conditions, preventing adverse effects to patients health to implement and evaluate individual treatment plans for chronic disease patients that promote health and well-being and ensure the appropriate maintenance and use of chronic disease registers. referring patients to secondary/specialist care as required to maintain accurate clinical records in conjunction with extant legislation To ensure read codes are used effectively by all members of the nursing team

    To provide routine nursing care to patients as required in accordance with clinical based evidence.

    To oversee the provision of wound care services to patients To co-ordinate the provision of travel medicine services

    To request pathology services as necessary

    To implement vaccination programmes for adults and children

    To support the clinical team with all safeguarding matters in accordance with local and national policies

    Carry out the following procedures

    Wound care including compression dressings

    Removal of sutures, staples

    ECG's

    Dopplers both manual and automatic

    Venepuncture

    spirometry

    Ear syringe

    LTC reviews Diabetic, COPD, Asthma, etc

    record accurate notes and use the correct templates provided

    Child immunisations

    Travel vaccinations

    Family planning including Pill checks

    Cervical smears

    Competent use of EMIS and Docman

    Clear polite manner
