Job summary

Milton surgery are looking for a Practice Nurse/Lead Nurse to join our friendly village setting practice on the outskirts of Cambridge. Supportive team with training and development encouraged. Salary is competitive and based on experience. Informal visits are welcome.

Main duties of the job

Job Scope:

  • Offer a wide range of nursing care provision to patients.
  • Lead and manage our small nursing team, consisting of a Nursing Associate, Health Care Assistant and Phlebotomist.
  • Be the infection, prevention and control lead for the surgery.
  • Be responsible for reviewing clinical policies and procedures to ensure best practices
  • Work within our nursing team to provide excellent and safe patient care.
  • Deliver excellent and safe patient care, focusing upon supporting patients to be healthy, monitoring long term conditions, health prevention and screening activities.
  • Work collaboratively with the general Practice team to meet the needs of patients

About us

We are a forward thinking friendly GP practice in a village setting on the outskirts of Cambridge seeking to recruit a passionate Practice/Lead Nurse to our small nursing team. We work in a light airy purpose built premises in the centre of the village and service a community of approximately 5100 patients. Our dedicated team includes four Doctors, a nursing associate, an HCA, Phlebotomist and Dispenser along with a very helpful & experienced administrative team.

We offer the full range of GMS services and achieve excellent QOF and long term condition results. Our practice is highly rate by patients and it is a pleasure to work in partnership with them to improve their health. We would like to extend the range of services we offer patients while maintaining the quality of care which comes from knowing them really well.

Our ideal candidate is an enthusiastic and motivated Nurse with excellent clinical and communication skills. We are looking for someone who is happy to lead our small friendly nursing team and who desires to make a difference to patients and the broader community.

  • Provide clinical leadership to the nursing team
  • Develop & implement clinical policies, procedures & best practices to maintain excellent patient care
  • Monitor & audit clinical performance, identifying area for improvement
  • Lead infection, prevention and control initiatives, ensuring compliance with national and local guidelines
  • Conduct infection control audits, risk assessments and staff training to maintain high standards of hygiene and safety
  • Continually review clinical practices, responding to national policies and initiatives where appropriate
  • Participate in shared learning within the practice, including the review of learning events, near miss events and complaints

Health & Safety

The post-holder will follow health and safety and infection control as defined in the practice Health & Safety policy, the practice Health & Safety manual, and the practice Infection Control policy and published procedures. This will include (but will not be limited to)

  • Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines
  • Awareness of national standards of infection control and cleanliness and regulatory / contractual / professional requirements, and good practice guidelines
  • Correct and safe management of the specimens process, including collection, labelling, handling, use of correct and clean containers, storage and transport arrangements
  • Maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the practice including provision, ordering, availability and ongoing correct usage by staff
  • Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks across clinical and patient processes
  • Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills
  • Monitoring practice facilities and equipment in relation to infection control, ensuring that provision of hand cleansing facilities, wipes etc are sufficient to ensure a good clinical working environment. Lack of facilities to be escalated as appropriate.
  • Safe management of sharps procedures including training, use, storage and disposal
  • Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy, clean and sterile, and safe way, free from hazards. Initiation of remedial / corrective action where needed or escalation to responsible management
  • Actively identifying, reporting, and correction of health and safety hazards and infection hazards immediately when recognised
  • Keeping own work areas and general / patient areas generally clean, sterile, identifying issues and hazards / risks in relation to other work areas within the business
  • Undertaking periodic infection control training (minimum twice annually)
  • Maintenance of work space standards
  • Waste management including collection, handling, segregation, container management, storage and collection
  • Spillage control procedures and training
  • Decontamination control procedures and training, and equipment maintenance
  • Maintenance of sterile environments
  • Demonstrate due regard for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

  • Maintaining NMC registration
