Job summary

The midwife has a responsibility to provide holistic woman/baby centred midwifery care; this may be leading midwifery care or working in collaboration with the multi- disciplinary team that advocates pregnancy as a normal physiological life event. The midwife will assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for the women/baby. The role will encompass taking responsibility for the management/ leadership of the ward/department/ community caseload on a shift-by-shift basis. To collaborate with external agencies and consumer groups.

The Midwife (Band 6) participates in the supervision and teaching of staff in clinical areas as well as being a Mentor/Assessor for midwifery students

Main duties of the job

Provide midwifery leadership in all areas of midwifery practice, demonstrating autonomy, advocacy for women and an excellent decision making style.

Provide direct clinical care to women and babies and support clinical teams and Band 7 Team Managers in the execution of his/her role

To provide clinical midwifery care during routine care and emergency scenarios, ensuring that sound up to date advice is given to women and their families in all care settings in accordance with best practice informed by NICE and Government initiatives.

Demonstrate effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills

Job responsibilities

Promote the wellbeing and safeguarding of children and young people by implementing the Trusts policy and procedures, acting promptly on concerns, communicating effectively and sharing information appropriately.

Assess, plan, implement clinical care and evaluate care women/babies for a defined clinical caseload, using evidence to rationalize prescribed care.

Develop links with all care agencies to facilitate seamless approach to maternity care.

Practice within boundaries of autonomy as described by the NMC Code 2015.

Review practices to reduce clinical risk. Record and report any untoward incidents and take action to avoid further incidents.

Promote health and wellbeing through practice and education of women, relatives, carers and staff

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Midwife
  • Evidence of ongoing further professional and personal development

Desirable

  • Teaching qualification/Mentorship/N97
  • Masters level study

Experience

Essential

  • Suitable Post-Registration experience within relevant speciality
  • Clinical experience in low and high risk intrapartum areas including cannulation, caring for women with epidurals, suturing
  • Competent in CTG interpretation

Desirable

  • Human Factors training/attendance

Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to recognise and report to line manager any factors compromising the quality of care given to mothers and babies
  • Willingness to input into working parties or special interest groups to facilitate a service that is forward thinking and dynamic
  • Ensure care is provided based on evidence and in line with the protocols and guidelines of the unit

Desirable

  • Knowledge of audit and research and standard setting

  • Organisational skills and the ability to work effectively within a management structure
  • Work with the MDT as well as autonomously when required
  • Basic IT skills
