Job summary

A very exciting opportunity for an Experienced Respiratory /Sleep Health Care Scientist to provide comprehensive Diagnostic investigations into both Respiratory Physiology and Sleep Diagnostics and Therapy , joining an engaged and patient focused team , delivering the highest care in a supportive environment. The role involves supporting the Respiratory Diagnostics Manager in delivery and planning of Service , Training of Junior staff , Audits and research and future progression of the Department,

Main duties of the job

o Fully competent in performing and reporting of the full range of routine and specialised lung function tests including non-routine and complex procedures such as IOS.

Experience in reporting Respiratory Sleep Studies and initiation/titration of CPAP Therapy. Experience in all aspects of CPAP review to include trouble- shooting, compliance, annual reviews.

o Responsible for departmental competence-based training programmes for all staff levels including liaising with Higher Education Institutions

o Responsible for the day-to-day organisation and management of the Respiratory Diagnostics & Sleep department in Managers absence

o Responsible for the teaching, training and assessing of Staff

o Supervision of less experienced staff

o Analysis, interpretation and reporting of lung function and specialised investigations

o Updates own professional knowledge

o Responsible for the day-to-day organisation of the departmental diagnostic and therapeutic service in conjunction with the Respiratory Diagnostics Manager/ Operational Manager

o Deputises for the Respiratory Diagnostics Manager in their absence

o Departmental training lead implementing competence-based training programmes for physiological measurement staff and co-ordinating various training programmes and adherence to National curricula.

Participation in research and development activities in Respiratory Medicine

Managerial and Organisational responsibilities (including human resource, financial, information and physical resource responsibilities)

Responsible for the day-to-day organisation of the departmental diagnostic and therapeutic service in conjunction with the Respiratory Diagnostics Manager/ Operational Manager

Deputises for the Respiratory Diagnostics Manager in their absence

Departmental training lead implementing competence-based training programmes for physiological measurement staff and co-ordinating various training programmes and adherence to National curricula.

Participate in the standard setting for all routine test procedures and equipment including participation in the development of standard operating procedures.

Contribute to the maintenance of safe working practices within the Respiratory Diagnostics & Sleep Department complying with all Health and Safety legislation, other relevant legislation and Trust policies.

Responsible for the specialist training and education of Respiratory Physiologists, Assistant HCS, nurses and other health care professionals in respiratory measurements

Undertaking appraisal of physiology staff within Respiratory Diagnostics & Sleep.

Undertaking aspects of staff recruitment, selection, appointment and employment in conjunction, where appropriate, with the Respiratory Diagnostics Manager and/ or Consultant /Operations Manager/Matron

Line manager responsibility of Senior Physiologists including attendance management, performance issues/ disciplinary procedures

To ensure that good communication exists between Lung function & sleep staff

Responsibility for the maintenance of departmental records, including the development of databases to improve information storage.

Plan and prioritise own workload within the department

Active participation in the Trust Multidisciplinary Respiratory meetings/Governance

Authorised signatory for area of budget within operational management

Performance of specialist exercise tests diagnostically such as full cardiorespiratory exercise tests, field exercise tests e.g. 6 minute walks, incremental/endurance shuttle walks

Initiation and monitoring of CPAP in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Provides specialist advise to doctors in both primary and secondary care

Produce accurate and comprehensive technical reports on the range of tests performed.

Participation in the supervision, collection and recording of appropriate tests and calibrations to ensure that the equipment in specified locations is functioning to agreed standards and specifications and is documented for technical audit.

Support and provide technical assistance for junior staff (physiology, nursing and medical) to develop their technical expertise.

Performance of and assistance with the testing of the more difficult patients and procedures that less experienced technologists may not be able to handle, to obtain good quality diagnostic information.

Interpretation of lung function and specialist tests.

Professional and Self Development responsibilities

Participation in national assessments for Scientific Training Programme.

Develop skills and knowledge as part of a departmental training programme, following Trust Personal Development and Review System (PDRS)

Acquisition of specialist knowledge and historical background of specialised techniques, developing a local library/database, with references.

Attend appropriate scientific and educational meetings and courses for personal skill and knowledge development updating and to present work as appropriate.

Participate in Continued Professional Development. Responsibilities for policy and service development and implementation

Ensure all staff are complying to standard operating procedures by access of departmental training meetings

Generate and implement protocols and standard operating procedures within own areas of responsibility.

Validation of equipment and implementation of new techniques specific to own areas of responsibility.

Liaising with nursing and medical staff on the provision of diagnostic and testing results and classification of those results.

Essential

  • Achieved Grades
  • Professional body registration to ARTP /HCSP

Desirable

  • Work Based assessor
  • 2 years minimum experience as Band 6/7 Physiologist

  • ARTP Accreditation Part 1 and 2
