Main duties of the job

We are looking for dedicated Healthcare assistants to join our In-Patient Unit. Working alongside other members of the Hospice multi-professional team, you will take pride in delivering care of an extremely high standard with a can do attitude. You will be fully supported, whilst gaining essential knowledge and skills in palliative care, plus you will have the opportunity to gain an extensive range of generic nursing skills.
We offer a premium rate for any work during unsocial hours e.g. nights and weekends. Lower rate enhancement is payable at the rate of hourly rate plus one third for hours worked between 8pm and 8am, Monday to Friday, and all-day Saturday. Higher rate enhancement is payable at the rate of hourly rate plus two thirds for any hours worked at any time on a Sunday or public holiday.

You will possess a good standard of general education and ideally have some experience of delivering hands on care, preferably on a ward, in the community or care home.

Job responsibilities
When working a shift on the Community Nursing Service, responsibilities will be carried out under the guidance of the patients Clinical Nurse and ESS Lead.
Carries out all personal care and activities of daily living for individual patients and groups of patients as required. Carries out delegated nursing activities to assist nursing staff, e.g. catheter and stoma care, eye and mouth care and report findings to nursing staff. Keeps nursing staff informed of observations and changes in condition relating to patient care. Assists with general orderliness and homely atmosphere of the patients own home as appropriate
Develops and maintains effective communication and liaison with patients, their families and carers.
Becomes familiar with, and follows the agreed Hospice policies and procedures
Contributes to maintaining the Hospices agreed philosophy, aims and objectives.
Works as part of the team to promote an atmosphere in the Community conducive to lifelong learning and high standards of care.
Promotes a safe environment for all patients, carers, visitors and staff in the Ward or the patients own home as appropriate.
The post holder may be asked to support the Hospice In-patient Unit on occasions where capacity threatens the fundamentals of core delivery. In these instances responsibilities will be carried out under the guidance of the Ward Manager / Clinical Lead and the Team Leader for the shift.

Essential
- Ability to deal with palliative care environment
- Ability to work well as part of a team
- Commitment to undertake shifts on the In-patient Unit and/or in the Community as
- appropriate to maintain fitness to practice
- Car Driver with Full Driving License
- Awareness of, and commitment to the Mission, Vision and Values of the Hospice
Qualifications
Essential
- Good standard of general education (GCSE English and Maths Grade C or equivalent)
- Understanding of basic nursing care of patients
- Essential requirements for AfC Band 3:
- NVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care

- Ability to complete paperwork accurately with required information

- Ability to articulate in a clear and sensitive manner

- Experience of delivering a palliative approach to nursing care within a healthcare environment
- Essential requirements for AfC Band 3 onwards:
- Previous experience of working within a Ward and/or Community nursing team
- Experience of nursing terminally ill patients and caring for their families in a Palliative/Oncology Setting
