Job summary
The Genomics and Molecular Medicine service at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust are seeking an enthusiastic, well organized and highly motivated individual to join our genomic technologist team as a Senior Healthcare Science Practitioner.
The ideal candidate will have HCPC or AHCS registration as either a Biomedical Science or Genetic technologist, or be actively in the process of obtaining registration. Applicants will have a good BSc honours degree, with substantial genomic lab experience and be willing to undertake the IBMS Specialist portfolio.
The successful candidate will join a team of Clinical Scientists and Genomic Technologists to provide a high quality patient focused genomic service. The applicant will possess excellent technical and manual dexterity skills as well as effective planning, organisational and communication skills to carry out a range of routine molecular and cytogenetic laboratory tests and associated analytical and reporting work. The post holder will be required to take responsibility for the delivery of specific area(s) of technical work within the laboratory; this will include management and training of staff as well as ensuring high quality processes are in place to manage timely and accurate sample processing.

The successful candidate will perform a range of scientific laboratory duties in order to provide an effective and high quality diagnostic clinical service to clinicians and patients.
The post holder after training will be responsible for section of technical workload which will include workload and team management whilst contributing to a variety of genomic testing analysis and reporting. In addition to this, the post holder will be required to undertake service development, training and quality assurance tasks as directed by senior team members.

The Genomic and Molecular Medicine Service is part of the Pathology Directorate based at City Hospital campus of Nottingham University Hospitals Trust, forming part of the East GLH as a Local Genomics Laboratory, alongside University Hospitals Leicester and Cambridge University Hospital as the lead laboratory.
The department brings together cytogenetics and molecular expertise into one genomics laboratory service. It is a friendly department with close working relationships with colleagues across Pathology, Clinical Genetics and Cancer Specialities. The department is accredited by the National School of Healthcare Science and the Institute of Biomedical Medical Science as a training laboratory, supporting staff development and training opportunities. The post-holder will take responsibility for the delivery of specific area(s) of technical work including training and co-ordinating other members of the technical team to deliver that work; validation and verification of technical processes relating to that area, monitoring and feeding back to responsible scientists on quality and timeliness of technical processing.
The post-holder will be required to manage referrals, ensure appropriate testing is assigned and all relevant information is available
The post-holder will be required to oversee and monitor the management of internal samples processing and outsourcing of tests and take responsibility for giving advice or guidance when required.
The post-holder will carry out genetic tests and undertake, plus oversee, analytical and reporting duties and other analytical methodologies after appropriate arises.
The post-holder will carry out duties relating to the Quality Management System, Health and Safety or Procurement of Reagents and/or equipment.
The post-holder will be required to deputise when the need arises
The ability to work well in a team and be able to communicate effectively with others is of paramount importance. The role is full time, however part time and flexible working arrangements will be considered.
Person Specification
Training and qualifications
Essential
- BSc Hons in relevant subject
- HCPC registration or on the voluntary register or have adequate experience to be in a position to undertake training to gain professional HCPC registration
Desirable
- MSc in relevant subject
- IBMS Specialist Diploma in relevant subject
Experience
Essential
- Several years' experience in a UK Regional Genetics Service or equivalent human genetics laboratory experience.
- Conscientious, Meticulous
- Demonstrates ability to organise their own work effectively.
- Keyboard skills and computer literacy
- Able to demonstrate competency in appropriate genomics laboratory techniques.
- Understanding of UKAS accreditation standards and how they affect day to day management of samples though the laboratory
Desirable
- Minimum 2 years post HCPC or voluntary State Registration experience
- Experience of leading/managing a team

- Able to communicate clearly and precisely, both verbally and in writing.
