We are a nurse led unit within the St Marys Hospital on the Isle of Wight, employed by Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust,

We have a part time role as a Senior Healthcare Support Worker to work within renal. We are a friendly nurse led unit caring for approximately 50-60 patients every week. You will possess good communication and interpersonal skills with a keen interest to develop your professional potential. Support and development will be provided through a competency-based framework.

We enjoy that we know our patients well and see the same patients every week. We are on St Marys site by detached from the main hospital.

You should have:

  • A desire to deliver a high standard of care to chronically ill patients.

Main duties of the job

  • Under the supervision of healthcare professionals, assist the healthcare team with the provision of clinical care for a defined caseload of patients.
  • Ensure high standards are maintained in a safe environment, which promotes equality and sensitivity for all individuals.

We work Monday to Saturday 6:30am until 23:20 in a 3 shift a day pattern.

Job responsibilities

Clinical

  • Promote patient focused care.
  • Assist the patient in activities of daily living, promoting patient comfort.
  • Assist in the emergency resuscitation of patients as per Portsmouth Hospitals Resuscitation Policy.
  • Assist with patient admissions and discharges.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for patients.
  • Assist other clinical areas within the Trust as the clinical situation and staffing levels require.

Communication and Working Relationships

  • Within the scope of the role, work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Promote and demonstrate effective communication at all times with patients, users and providers to the service.
  • Record and report information onto patient administration systems.
  • Undertake specific organisational and administrative duties as required.
  • Report adverse incidents.
  • Facilitate the building of therapeutic relationships with patients, carers and other health professionals, to support patients and carers through the various phases of chronic illness, including the terminal stage.
  • To maintain safe practice in a safe environment, participating in the development of procedures to minimise the risks associated with the use of hazardous chemicals and exposure to blood inherent in the dialysis process.
  • To demonstrate an understanding of the principles and underpinning knowledge required in gaining access for dialysis.
  • To maintain a safe environment and to consider personal safety when handling and disposing of sharps i.e. prevent needle stick injury.
  • Ability to use the dialysis machines required to dialyse patients. To be able to prepare, use and clean said equipment.
  • Good communication and liaison within the multi-disciplinary team to enable coordinated care.
  • Participate in the efficient running of outpatient renal clinics within the region, including transplantation, pre-dialysis, CAPD and haemodialysis.
  • To participate rotational organisational role programme, including stores ordering, and preparing forms and bottles for monthly blood collecting.

Educational

  • Support cadets, and other support workers in the delivery of care.
  • Participate in ward or department projects, including audit and quality initiatives pertinent to the role.
  • Participate in and contribute to updating orientation and induction programmes within your area.
  • Act as a link or associate link for a specific area of practice, e.g. health and safety, infection control.
  • To demonstrate and understanding for the appropriate monitoring and intervention of dialysis complications.
  • To have knowledge of the basic principles of haemodialysis.

Person Specification

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Effective patient/client care skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to meet the minimum skill set within first twelve months of appointment with support and development where required (list of skills as defined in generic competency framework).

Desirable

  • IT skills
  • European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)

Experience

Essential

  • Experience / Specialist skills relating to Renal
  • Desire to deliver compassionate hands on care in the hospital / outpatient environment

Desirable

  • Competent cannulating

Qualifications

Essential

  • QCF or BTEC or equivalent (NVQ) Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care/Clinical Health
  • Level 2 Maths and English Language

Desirable

  • NVQ III in dialysis or completed Renal HCSW development programme
