Job summary
The Black Country Pathology Service (BCPS) is seeking to recruit a Senior Medical Laboratory Assistant, AfC Band 3. The post will be based within the Microbiology hub laboratory at New Cross Hospital.
The postis full time,37.5 hrs per week and includes participation in a late evening (until 22.00hrs) and weekend/Bank Holiday cover on a rotational basis. The successfulcandidate will be supporting teams of Biomedical Scientists in all sections of the laboratory including bacteriology, serology and molecular biology. They should be able to work as part of a team or under their own initiative. Recent experience in a similar environment is essential and familiarity with automated diagnostic systems would be beneficial although training will be provided.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is expected to work as part of a team in the Microbiology laboratory, both within sample reception and the Microbiology and Serology laboratories. After training they will be required to carry out basic laboratory procedures, accepting receipt and processing diagnostic specimens and refer samples to reference laboratories. Carrying out maintenance, quality control, preparing samples and processing them on the automated platforms listed above.
Attention to detail are essential to these processes and form the greater part of the working day. The post holder will offer a helpful andprofessional service to all visitors and telephone callers and will assist the Department of Microbiology in the provision of a highly quality service

Job responsibilities
- To be responsible for the receipt of samples into the laboratory and completing pre analytical processing of specimens.
- Work independently, or as part of a team, to undertake routine preparation and examination of a wide range of samples using manual and automated techniques.
- To manage own workload, identify and expedite urgent samples and prioritise using own initiative, referring to senior staff for guidance when necessary.
- To download generated test results onto the computer system prior to technical validation.
- To document and package specimens referred to other laboratories ensuring that the correct tests have been requested and that transport regulations are adhered to according to written protocols for the safe transport of pathogenic isolates.
- To train and supervise new staff in appropriate methodologies and procedures.
7. Prepare reagents, stock solutions and laboratory disinfectants as directed.
