We are seeking a dynamic quantitative researcher for a long-term role with substantial opportunity to develop a research agenda and career.

Main duties of the job

Bradford Institute for Health Research hosts:

- Born in Bradford, a birth cohort study including over 12,000 young people and their families;

- BiB: Age of Wonder, which is collecting data about the health and wellbeing of 30,000 adolescents in Bradford over the next 7 years;

- Born in Bradford's Better Start, the world's first interventional cohort study that is evaluating early life interventions such as breastfeeding support;

- Connected Bradford, a research database of linked administrative records from the from the NHS and local authority, covering the whole population of Bradford.

These resources, together with a large multidisciplinary research team and strong connections with the local community, make Bradford Institute for Health Research one of the most exciting places for health data science and epidemiology in the world.

Job responsibilities

The main purpose of this post is to use these resources to do scientific studies that can improve the health of people in Bradford. You will develop and contribute towards a research agenda investigating adolescent mental health.

You will also contribute towards the research support service offered by the Bradford Centre for Health Data Science, and support colleagues doing quantitative research.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • Worked in a multidisciplinary research team in a health-related field
  • Conducted statistical analyses for epidemiological research projects
  • Published research, with a minimum of three publications as first or contributing author in peer reviewed journals

Desirable

  • Conducted statistical analysis for research projects in the area(s) of adolescent mental health, digital and social media, or inequalities
  • Worked with routinely collected data, such as GP or hospital data, and processed this kind of data so it can be used for research
  • Gained approvals from research ethics committees or other relevant research authorities

Skills

Essential

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
  • Managing, processing, and organising complex data, for example longitudinal cohort data or healthcare data collected by GPs
  • Doing statistical analysis such as matching, regression, and classification
  • Using statistical software such as R or Python, including documentation of analysis
  • Working on multiple projects in parallel

Knowledge

Essential

  • Epidemiological methods including cohort studies, cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, quasi-experimental designs, and randomised controlled trials

Desirable

  • Causal inference study designs and methods

Qualifications

Essential

  • PhD in a relevant area, or a relevant postgraduate qualification and a minimum of three years relevant research work experience
