Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, hardworking and self-motivated staff nurse to join our team working within the 4 bedded bay on the main ward on the award winning, GOLD accredited Post Anaesthetic Care Unit. Winners of the Continuous Improvement Award 2022 Cheshire and Merseyside best practice event.

The PACU is designed for patient stays between 6-48 hours depending on patient and type of surgery. The PACU is part of the planned care directorate within the digestive diseases CBU. These include Trauma and Orthopaedic, ENT, Urology and Breast Surgery.

The nursing team consists of highly skilled PACU nurses, a ward manager, matron, lead nurse and associate chief nurse.

Experience with level 1.5 patients, critical care/theatre experience is desirable although this role could be a development opportunity for an experienced band 5 nurse wanting to develop their knowledge. You will have the opportunity to be supported through completing stage 1 critical care competencies.

Main duties of the job

To assist the Ward/Unit Manager in creating and maintaining an environment in which members of the ward/department team can contribute to the maximum of their ability in providing a high standard of care, staff welfare and staff training.

As this is a development role, the opportunity to complete Level 1 patients and enhanced care area competencies will be available with protected in house competency/practical study time.

Close monitoring of postoperative patients who have been booked for PACU and supporting junior staff to maintain patient safety during and after recovery from anaesthesia.

Measuring vital signs using invasive and non invasive monitoring, nursing level 1.5 patients using metaraminol and Opti flow. Giving enhanced recovery and monitoring to post op patients over on a cold site CSTM Halton. By nursing these patients over at Halton, it is imperative that close post op monitoring is adhered to and timely escalation of deterioration of these patients is carried out.

About us

PACU is a small, motivated team consisting of a department manager/practice educator a mix of band 6 and band 5 nurses and 1 HCA.

Many of the band 6 staff were originally senior band 5s and have upskilled within their roles in PACU and are continuing their own development within their current band 6 roles.

There are two international band 5 nurses who have both completed their Level 1 patients and enhanced care area competencies.

As you can see our focus is on training and retention of staff to ensure safe, evidence based care is given to patients. We are an enhanced recovery care area and by applying for the role you will complete your competencies in this area.

The PACU is based on the CSTM ward, patient feedback is excellent. Many commenting on the time spent with patients, patients being involved in their recovery and noting that patients feels listened too.

Job responsibilities

Act as an effective mentor for junior nurses and health care support workers.

Experience with level 1.5 patients, critical care/theatre experience is desirable although this role could be a development opportunity for an experienced band 5 nurse wanting to develop their knowledge. You will have the opportunity to be supported through completing stage 1 critical care competencies.

The post holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs, and for the development and implementation of programmes of care without supervision.
