Job summary
Applications are invited for the full time substantive post of Consultant Urologist at Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This is a new appointment to our currently Urology base. The new appointee is expected to undertake the management of independent core Urology procedures such as performing TURP, TURBT, DSU lists, Flexi and rigid URS laser lithotripsy and ESWL. A special interest in advanced BPH surgery such as REZUM and HoLEP or RARP and Nephrectomy procedures is required, as well as the ability to carry out LATP and TULA procedures.

Main duties of the job
- To provide inpatient and outpatient services- To be part of a multidisciplinary team, this includes radiologists, oncologists, pathologists and clinical nurse specialists.- To contribute to the training and educational and clinical supervision of Higher and Basic Surgical trainees and other professional team members.- To provide appraisals and assessment of medical staff supporting the team.- To develop special interests to enhance what is currently undertaken in the department.- To fulfil continuing professional development in line with clinical governance.- To participate in audit and other areas of the Care Group responsibility.- To be involved in a 1:6 consultant of the week on call rota with prospective cover, covering Urology patients.- To support the development of the service
About us
This post is located at Dorset County Hospital (DCH). The Trust serves a population of approximately 250,000 and is situated in the historic town of Dorchester in an attractive part of Dorset. The area is served by high quality schools and is close to some of the most beautiful coastline in the UK.
Job responsibilities
Urology shares beds with the Surgical Department . There is a Short Stay Unit for patients staying 48 hours or less, Abbotsbury Ward and Lulworth Ward.
The Urology Service provides Outpatients in the Community Hospitals in the area, including Blandford, Weymouth, Lyme Regis and Bridport. The new appointee will undertake Outpatients in a community hospital.
The Dorset Renal Unit is based in Dorset County Hospital. This has meant an increased workload for the Urology Department who regularly undertake surgery on transplant and dialysis patients. On average the department does 40 - 50 nephrectomies from all over the region a year. In addition to this it also undertakes transplant nephrectomies as well as other routine surgery on dialysis and transplant patients.
The Urolithiasis workload of the department has increased dramatically over the last few years. The department currently undertakes PCNL, flexible and rigid ureterorenoscopies and holmium laser. Robotic prostatectomies for West Dorset patients are carried out by Mr Afzal at Royal Bournemouth hospital.
The new appointee is expected to provide independent core Urology procedures such as performing TURP, TURBT, DSU lists, Flexi and rigid URS laser lithotripsy and ESWL. A special interest in RARP and Nephrectomy or in advanced BPH surgery such as REZUM and HoLEP is required, as well as the ability to carry out LATP and TULA procedures.
There would also be an opportunity to support other procedures such as PCNL and ESWL
The successful candidate will be provided with office accommodation and secretarial support.
The Trust has an agreed formulary for medical and surgical consumables and single use instruments; any appointee would be expected to comply and use the items on this formulary. Any additions or changes to the formulary can only be made through formal channels.

Education, Qualifications & Training
Essential
- Higher UK clinical qualification e.g. FRCS/Urol or overseas equivalent
- Awarded CCST or on Specialist register OR either of these anticipated within 6 months of interview
Experience
Essential
- 5 years clinical experience in Urology at SPR or equivalent
- Experience demonstrating potential ability to cope with the demands of a DGH based Consultant
- Experience in PCNL, Ureteroscopies and laser.
- Experience in RARP and/or Nephrectomy
