The island is also home to the third-largest volcano structure in the world, Mount Teide, which promises spectacular views from the summit.

The island’s colourful capital, Santa Cruz – known for its laid-back atmosphere, beautiful beaches, such as Las Teresitas, and thriving arts scene – is worth visiting. And, for adventure seekers, Tenerife offers plenty of chances for whale and dolphin watching, world-class surfing, and scenic hiking in Anaga Rural Park.

2. Antalya, Turkey

Antalya, Turkey

Antalya is a coastal wonderland, known for its sweeping white sand beaches, intriguing ancient Greek ruins, and lively nightlife. As the largest coastal city in Turkey, it’s known as the gateway to the Turkish Riviera, offering the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. This is especially true of beautiful beaches like Olympos Beach and Phaselis, located within easy reach of fascinating historical sites.

More than 200 of Antalya’s beaches have Blue Flag status, with calm, clear waters that are wonderful for swimming. Kaputaş Beach is particularly stunning! Beach life aside, Antalya’s old town is a delight to explore and a unique trip to Sandland showcases impressive sand sculptures from artists worldwide. The Ancient City of Perge is also a must-see – close to the city centre and established in 1000 BC, it’s one of the most well-preserved ancient cities in the world.

3. The Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve enjoys over 300 annual days of sunshine and some of Europe’s most stunning beaches. Highlights include Praia da Marinha, a postcard-perfect cove with towering limestone cliffs and turquoise waters and Benagil Beach, famous for its spectacular sea cave with a natural skylight.

Inland, rolling hills, almond orchards, and traditional whitewashed villages add to the region’s charm. Towns like Lagos, Albufeira, and Tavira blend history, nightlife, and delicious local cuisine, including fresh seafood and cataplana stew. Whether you prefer dolphin-watching, sunbathing on golden beaches, or hiking breathtaking coastal trails, the Algarve has something for everyone.

4. Agadir, Morocco

Agadir, Morocco

Fine, sandy beaches, year-round sun, all-inclusive hotels, and vibrant souks are just a few reasons Agadir is viewed as a top holiday destination. This southern Moroccan city was rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1960 – and, today, some of its highlights include a lively marina, inviting parks and gardens, the palm-fringed Corniche promenade, and the fascinating Musée du Patrimoine Amazigh, which offers good insight into the culture of the Berber people.

Agadir Beach is the city’s main stretch of golden sand, stretching for 10km along much of the city’s length with a huge choice of water sports, restaurants, and cafes. Alternatively, head to Taghazout Beach for relaxed, bohemian vibes; spot over 100 different species of birds on the beaches of Souss Massa National Park; or kick back on Imourane Beach, a coastal gem known for its breathtaking natural beauty.

5. Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia, Italy

The second-largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily, Sardinia is a feast of incredible beaches; mouthwatering cuisine; fascinating myths, traditions, and archaeological sites; and beautiful hiking trails. Sardinia may be part of Italy and similar in many ways but it’s also incredibly different with its language, culture, and flag. It’s also part of the Blue Zones, one of just a few places around the world where people live longest.

For beach lovers, the Costa Smeralda is famous for its crystal clear waters and luxurious resorts – or head to the paradisiacal village of Chia, home to mysterious pink sand beaches with emerald seas and pink flamingos. History lovers can also visit Su Nuraxi di Barumini, a UNESCO-listed Nuragic complex or wander Alghero’s old town, while foodies can enjoy porceddu (roast suckling pig) with traditional Cannonau wine.

6. Corfu, Greece

Corfu, Greece

Corfu is a bit of an underrated Greek gem. But its lush, green landscapes – think thousands of olive groves and cypress trees – make it one of the prettiest Greek Islands. Its diverse beaches also range from the golden sands of Glyfada to the rugged cliffs of Porto Timoni, and the quiet coves of Paleokastritsa, with waters as clear as glass.

Local delicacies like sofrito (garlic-marinated beef), pastitsada (spiced meat pasta), and fresh seafood are a must-try. And, for history lovers, Corfu Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, featuring Venetian, French, and British influences. Visitors can explore the Old and New Fortresses, the Liston Promenade, and the Achilleion Palace, once the retreat of Empress Elisabeth of Austria.

7. Costa Del Sol, Spain

Costa Del Sol, Spain

You’ll never be short of beach options in the Costa Del Sol – you could even visit a new beach every day of your holiday. Visiting this beloved Spanish coastal region can feel like being in the tropics. With palm trees, vibrant blue waters, toasty warm sand, and mouthwatering cuisines like lobster paella and crispy calamari, there’s a slice of paradise to be found here.

Costa del Sol is all about sun, sea, and adventure. Relax on Marbella’s glamorous beaches, surf in Tarifa, or snorkel in Nerja’s crystal waters. Stroll Málaga’s lively streets, explore ancient castles, or hike the exciting Caminito del Rey. By night, hit buzzing beach clubs or feast on fresh seafood with a cold glass of rosé.

8. South of France

South of France

Swish and suave with more than 100km of coastline, the South of France captures hearts with its charm – even inspiring the likes of Monet and Picasso! For the dreamiest beachside experience, head to Cannes; the land of sapphire-blue waters, delicious seafood eateries, elegant boutiques, and exquisite architecture.

The town of Menton (also known as “the pearl of France”) is another top choice. Picturesque and slow-going, Menton is famous for its lemon festival, which celebrates the area’s citrus heritage. Its pastel-hued mansions, swaying palms, gorgeous beaches, and Italian ice cream (Italy is only five minutes away!) exude tropical, summer vibes.

9. Montenegro

Montenegro

Montenegro is blessed with lovely beaches, soaring mountains, sparkling lakes, and quaint towns. The tiny country’s almost 300km of coastline offers soft sands, rocky cliffs, and secluded coves – with one of the most famous beaches being the Bay of Kotor. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a breathtaking expanse of cerulean coves, pebble beaches, and medieval towns nestled beneath Mount Lovćen, the dramatic “black mountain” that inspired Montenegro’s name.

Over 3,000 plant species thrive here, too, including 22 endemic varieties and many rare ones, plus Europe’s oldest olive tree, believed to be 2,000 years old. To find the tree, head to Mirovica, five kilometres from Bar towards Ulcinj. You also won’t want to miss the unspeakably beautiful green oasis that is Tara Canyon – the deepest canyon in Europe and the second-deepest in the world.

10. Malta, Gozo, and Comino

Malta, Gozo, and Comino

If you love Greece, you’ll surely enjoy Malta and the tiny neighbouring islands of Gozo and Comino, located in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea between Sicily and North Africa. Golden Bay and Ramla Bay stand out for their wonderful sandy shores, while Comino Island’s Blue Lagoon is famous for its mesmerising aqua-blue water.

While Malta’s picturesque bays and warm climate are major highlights, history lovers can also explore 7,000 years of human heritage. Stroll through the winding streets of Mdina, the island’s former capital, nicknamed the “Silent City.” Discover Valletta, a UNESCO-listed capital rich in Baroque architecture and historic sites – or visit the Ġgantija Temples, ancient megalithic structures predating the Egyptian pyramids.
