January is a time for new beginnings and adventures – so, why not set some ambitious travel goals for 2024? Solo travel can be one of the most exciting things you ever do – and while travelling by yourself can seem daunting, particularly if you’ve not done it before, the joy and rewards you’ll get out of it are unparalleled.

However, it’s important to choose the right country when travelling solo – and even more important if you’re travelling in January. For example, it can help to pick a destination where the weather is good, the sights are open, and there are enough travellers around for you to meet new people and make friends.

So, if you’re thinking about expanding your horizons and doing some travelling by yourself, we’ve got you covered. Here are nine fabulous solo travel destinations for January.

1. Lanzarote, Spain

Lanzarote, Spain

If you don’t want to travel too far by yourself, Spain’s Canary Islands are always a good bet for a solo adventure. Blessed with year-round sunshine, these volcanic islands are lovely and warm in January, and there are enough tourists around that you’ll be able to meet other people. Lanzarote is known for its stunning lunar-like landscape, and it’s home to some of the best beaches in the Canaries.

Along the coast, there are lively resorts like Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca, where the beaches are ideal for soaking up the sun. When you’re not relaxing by the pool or on the sand, you can stroll along the bustling promenade, visiting the many bars and restaurants. Inland, the scenery will take your breath away, and you can hike among rugged mountains, black rocks, and ancient volcanoes.

2. Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka

For something a little more exotic, why not think about heading to Sri Lanka? Sri Lanka’s dry season is from December to March, which makes January one of the best times to go when it comes to the weather. Temperatures hover between 20–30C, and if you’re looking to start the New Year in the right way, Sri Lanka’s yoga scene, Ayurvedic massages, and healthy, delicious cuisine are ideal.

Away from the beaches, the beautiful lakeside town of Kandy is one of the country’s top attractions, and it’s steeped in culture. The surrounding land is home to looming mountains, picturesque tea plantations and biodiverse rainforests, and the trekking here is sensational. Head off the beaten path to discover ancient rock fortresses, fascinating wildlife, and virtually untouched villages.

3. Thailand

Thailand

Beautiful, safe, and budget-friendly, Thailand is widely regarded as one of the world’s top solo travel destinations. January is an excellent time to go, as the rainy season has finished and temperatures are warm but not yet scorching, averaging around the late 20Cs. Plus, because it’s such a popular stop on the travel trail, you’re sure to meet plenty of other tourists and travellers during your trip.

Bangkok’s frenetic energy is alluring at any time of year, but to enjoy a more peaceful break, head to Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand, where you can admire wild cherry trees in bloom. For a lazy beach break, the islands of the Andaman Sea are dreamy in January, and you can swim, sunbathe and snorkel to your heart’s content. The fantastic street food scene here is just an added bonus!

4. Finland

If you’re not that fussed about getting a dose of winter sun, then why not travel to a country that comes into its own during winter? Finland is the eighth-largest country in Europe, and it’s also one of the most magical. This is a land of snow-sprinkled forests, steaming saunas, wandering reindeer, countless lakes, elegant cities, and – of course – the ethereal aurora borealis.

Flying into the capital Helsinki, you can embrace Finland’s cosy café culture, visit museums, and marvel at the grand architecture. But to really see what this country is about, head north to Lapland, where you can learn about the Sami people, leap into icy lakes, and sip warming glögi (mulled wine). Kicking off the New Year by seeing the northern lights will be an experience you remember forever.

5. Madeira, Portugal

Madeira, Portugal

If you’re a nature lover who wants to get away from it all, then a solo trip to Madeira might be just the ticket. Located just north of the Canary Islands, this Portuguese island is so beautiful that it has two nicknames: ‘the Pearl of the Atlantic’ and the ‘Island of Eternal Spring’. As the names suggest, Madeira has year-round sun, and January sees pleasant temperatures of around 18°C.

At this time of year, the hiking trails are stunning, and you can trek along sweeping valleys, past thundering waterfalls, and through sleepy hilltop villages. The flora and fauna here are dazzling, so prepare to be blown away by this unique island’s beauty and diversity! In the lively capital Funchal, you can meet other travellers, enjoy delicious, fresh food, and sip local wine in the outdoor cafes.

6. South Africa

South Africa

With temperatures hovering around a balmy 22°C, and the ocean warming up, January might be the best time to visit South Africa. It may not be the cheapest destination, but if you can afford a tour, you get a serious bang for your buck. Plus, on group tours, you don’t just have a safer, hassle-free holiday to look forward to, with everything sorted for you, but you’re guaranteed to meet people on the way.

You can learn about Johannesburg’s turbulent past and inspiring future in Soweto Township, and take a cable car up Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain, where you can admire stunning views across Cape Point. At Kruger National Park you can spot lions, giraffes, elephants, hyenas, and cheetahs in their natural habitat, and along the way, you’ll pass through some of the world’s most dramatic scenery.

7. Fuerteventura, Spain

Fuerteventura, Spain

Another Canary Island that makes a great solo destination is Fuerteventura. The oldest Canary Island, Fuerteventura is a staggering 20 million years old, and while there are all the buzzing resorts you’d expect from such a travel hotspot, there’s plenty of natural history and culture to be found here too. Plus, with over 150 beaches, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to sun, sea, and sand.

And then there are the watersports. Fuerteventura offers some of the best watersports in Spain, so if you’re keen to try windsurfing or kitesurfing, you’re in the right place. In Parque Natural de Corralejo, you can trek up rolling sand dunes, while the lava fields, rugged valleys and traditional villages inland are endlessly fascinating. Vibrant resort towns like Corralejo and Costa Caleta will also keep you busy!

8. Argentina

Argentina

January is summer in Argentina, so if you’re looking for a solo adventure in South America, it’s a great time to go. As one of the wealthiest and safest countries in Latin America, Argentina is a popular destination for solo travellers. And, because this big, beautiful country is so diverse, there’s a landscape and holiday for everyone, no matter what type of break you’re looking for.

If you’re seeking adventure, head south to wild Patagonia; here, the melting snow will reveal miles of sensational trails past jagged mountains, around milky blue lakes, and past shimmering glaciers. Dreaming of a lazy yet culture-rich break? Head to buzzing Buenos Aires and the region of Mendoza, where you can spend sunny days feasting on rich food, sipping fine wine, and learning to tango.

9. Malta

If you’re thinking about a short-haul city break, then Malta might be the ideal destination. While you can expect temperatures of around 16C, the mild climate is perfect for sightseeing – and if you’re into culture, history, and architecture, you’ll be in your element. Malta’s capital Valletta might be small, covering just one square kilometre, but it’s packed with splendour.

The narrow streets are lined with ornate medieval and baroque architecture, and you can spend hours visiting the many palaces, museums, and churches. You can people-watch in the harbour, soak up the gentle sun in the many outdoor restaurants and bars, and watch the boats bob gently on the water. The beautiful medieval walled city of Mdina is just 20 minutes away by bus too.
