Volunteer Visitor – Cornwall

Mencap

Job Description

Are you a kind and patient person? Do you enjoy connecting over a pork pie and a pint? Can you spare some time just 6 times a year to visit a person with a learning disability?

We support a 65-year-old year old gentleman just South of Truro who would like a volunteer to do just this. He enjoys quiet time at home and in the garden, or perhaps even a stroll to the shop or a pub. The care team who work with him at his home are highly qualified and know him well. They would make sure that you feel well supported in your role. If all else fails he can be bribed with a well placed pork pie!

Although he does not use verbal speech, he will definitely connect with you in other ways. This includes gestures, facial expressions, and by leading you to what he wants. Experience with learning disabilities is not needed, as long as you are caring, patient, and have an open mind!

About the Mencap Visiting Service

We offer a lifelong befriending service for adults with learning disabilities. Matching the skills and interests of passionate visitors with the specific hobbies and interests of the people we visit. Visitors visit six times a year to create a 1-2-1 connection, offer companionship, encourage people to do the things they enjoy and check-in on their wellbeing. In many cases, the visitor is the only person in someone's life who isn't paid to be there for them.
