Job Description

As Treasurer play a key role in preserving and celebrating Hackney's rich architectural heritage. At the heart of our financial management and strategic planning, ensure the continued success and sustainability of our cherished historic buildings.

What will you be doing?

The Trust is seeking a dedicated and skilled individual to join our Board as Treasurer. A unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in preserving and celebrating Hackney's rich architectural heritage. You will be at the heart of our financial management and strategic planning, ensuring the continued success and sustainability of our cherished historic buildings.

The Trust is responsible for iconic landmarks such as the Round Chapel and St. Augustine's Tower. These venues host a vibrant array of community events and activities, from music concerts and art exhibitions to educational tours and historical reenactments. Your expertise will help us maintain the financial health of the Trust, enabling us to expand our reach and enhance our impact within the community.

We are looking for a Treasurer who shares our passion for heritage conservation and community engagement.

Principle Responsibilities of the Treasurer

The Treasurer holds a critical role in ensuring the financial health and compliance of the organisation. Working with the other Trustees, the General Manager, staff and financial advisors as appropriate, the key responsibilities include ensuring that the Trust receives the broader advice needed to manage and maintain its current assets and to consider other opportunities to secure a sustainable future. This will include:

  1. Financial Management and Oversight
  2. Strategic Financial Planning.
  3. Compliance and Governance
  4. Internal Controls and Risk Management
  5. Investment oversight
  6. Reporting and Communication

What are we looking for?

Person Specification

We would expect at least 3 years previous experience in a role that demonstrates these skills.

The ideal candidate for the role of Treasurer at the Hackney Historic Buildings Trust will possess a blend of financial acumen, strategic insight, and a passion for heritage preservation. Key qualities and qualifications include:

Essential Criteria

1. Professional Qualifications and Experience

  • A recognised accounting qualification (e.g., ACA, ACCA, CIMA) or significant experience in financial management.
  • Proven experience in budgeting, financial reporting, and financial analysis.
  • Previous experience in a similar role within the charity sector or a strong understanding of charity finance and regulation.

2. Skills and Competencies

  • Excellent financial literacy, with the ability to interpret complex financial information and convey it clearly.
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.

3. Governance and Compliance

  • Thorough understanding of charity finance regulations and legal responsibilities.
  • Experience in ensuring compliance with financial policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of risk management and internal control systems.

As Treasurer you will bring professional skills and oversight and will work with our General Manager to review how the organisation manages its finances, provide confidence that our systems are appropriate to our size, and may in your work have identified and supported change if appropriate.

Considering the longer term planning, help us develop the critical asset management strategies for our historic buildings, and help identify and explore strategic planning for their futures. You will be part of a team that has helped identify, and will have reviewed, opportunities for other possible projects to bring together a portfolio of projects that will help secure the heritage of Hackney share it with the wider community, in the context of a sound financial strategy supported by risk management.
