Job Description

The Royal Gunpowder Mills is a 170 acre site protected for its' industrial heritage and natural history. Almost the whole site is classed as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM) and is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). We open to the public to share the exhibitions and offer tours and activities. We run a schools programme that fits with the history of the site and the National Curriculum. We offer hire space and interesting environments for filming. The charity's aims are to protect, preserve and enhance the special aspects of the site and to share the story of the industrial and social history, the science and the nature.

Visitors are offered the 30 minute tractor trailer guided tour around the site, where they can see and learn about RGM's science, nature and history. As a volunteer driver you will learn the route and skills involved to manoeuvre the tractor and trailer around the bends and over the bridges of the site giving a comfortable ride to the visitors.

All you need is a full UK driving licence, to pass your assessment

and have some free time at weekends.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • To prepare the tractor and trailer each day ensuring they are clean and ready for use, and place the seat cushions in position.
  • Helping visitors to safely board and disembark the trailer.
  • To work with the team to operate the ramp for disabled. passengers and secure passenger's wheelchairs safely on the trailer.
  • To drive the tractor pulling the trailer for Land Train tours in a safe manner.
  • To be prepared to engage with the visitors in a friendly and helpful manner.
  • Assist the team in keeping to the timetable for the day.
  • Ensuring that all work is carried out in accordance with the Company's Health and Safety Policy and other relevant policies.

We seek someone:

  • With a full UK driving licence.
  • Able to work as part of a team especially with the Tour Guides.
  • Who is able to keep to time allocations to work in conjunction with other activities.
  • Reliable, e.g. informing the relevant Royal Gunpowder Mills staff in good time, where possible, if not able to attend on any agreed days/times.
  • To be prepared to engage with the visitors in a friendly, calm and helpful manner.
  • Who, after the training, is able to pass the driving assessment.

Ideally you would be willing to volunteer for some Sundays and/or occasional weekdays. There is a rota for when we are open to the public or other times when groups are booked, volunteers offer their time and a rota is drawn up to be sure the tours are covered.

Your volunteering role would be subject to satisfactory references.
