Introduction to The Phoenix Group
We’re passionate about creating a brighter future for everyone. We are the UK’s largest long-term savings and retirement business and there are over 8,000 of us who make us who we are. As a FTSE 100 company with c.£310 billion of assets under administration and 13 million customers, we understand that our scale and expertise means that we have a key role to play for our customers, colleagues and our communities. We’re able to help tackle society’s biggest challenges, from the climate catastrophe to the growing savings gap. Bring your passion and commitment, and we’ll give you the opportunity to make a real difference to the causes that are shaping everyone’s lives.
Our average employee age is 40.2 (higher than the industry norm of 39) and 27% of our workforce are aged 50 and over. We employ more women (54%) than the financial services average (45%) and the proportion of LGBTQ+ colleagues is 5% (vs the UK LGBTQ+ population of 2.7%). We know we have more work to do and we’re thrilled to be working with Rest Less.

Why work with The Phoenix Group
We want to be the best place that any of our colleagues have ever worked.
We’re here to help secure a life of possibilities for our colleagues, as well as our customers. When you join us, you’ll discover a supportive working environment where you can not only thrive professionally, but also create genuinely positive impact through your everyday work.
We’re committed to providing a supportive, open and inclusive work environment. We offer opportunities for you to challenge and develop yourself, and this means there is enormous opportunity for our 8,000 colleagues to grow alongside us.
In order to be the best place that we’ve ever worked, we ensure that everyone feels welcome, safe and has the opportunity to succeed. We want to hire the whole version of you, and we’d love to hear your story.
Quote from our CEO, Andy Briggs, who is the Government Business Champion for Older workers:
“Age is embedded in our Diversity and Inclusion work and we have a specific colleague group, called Ignite, who help shape our strategies for our employees who are in the 3rd quarter of life. We are also ensuring that any imagery we use is age-diverse, by including older workers. We are trying to make all of our recruitment inclusive, and language checking for inference of bias to specific genders or age is an important part of that. We also offer an attractive range of employer benefits for all our employees, including flexible working from day one of employment and professional development programmes which we know increases the likelihood of older applicants applying.”
Why we’re working with Rest Less
We know that it’s important to have a variety of perspectives. A mixed-age workforce offers us a wealth of life experiences, viewpoints and makes Phoenix the best place that any of us have ever worked. One of our values is difference, and we celebrate all of the unique and diverse people that make us who we are.
We’re working with Rest Less to:
- Help the over 50s in their search for employment – whether this be permanent, full time, part time, flexible or anything else!
- Drive greater age diversity at Phoenix.
- Provide information and materials in partnership with Rest Less on a variety of topics, for example making a career change
Tamar Hughes, Head of Talent and Development, says, “I am delighted that Phoenix Group has launched its partnership with Rest Less as part of its ongoing efforts to promote age diverse recruitment. The over-50s represent a third of our workforce and yet often, due to their age, they will find it much harder to re-enter or change careers within the workforce. That is why Phoenix Group has launched its partnership with Rest Less with job adverts that focus on the behaviours and skills required, rather than the personality of an applicant, to avoid deterring any age group.”

Example roles at The Phoenix Group
Customer Service Representative
Making choices about your pension is one of the biggest financial decisions most people make in their lives. You would be the first point of contact for pension & retirement queries from our Standard Life customers, IFAs and corporate clients.
We often have full and part time opportunities to join our Customer Operations contact centre dealing with a range of queries. Our team play a key role in ensuring customers are equipped with all of the information they need to make the right decision regarding their pension policies. All we ask for is that you have a passion for delivering the best customer service, enjoy learning and have PC skills – you don’t need any specific experience as full and ongoing training will be provided. We also offer this role as an apprenticeship, open to everyone, for those looking to gain a formal qualification.
Talent Acquisition and HR
We’re passionate about providing an outstanding experience to our colleagues and candidates. In Talent Acquisition, we manage the recruitment and onboarding of our new joiners. This ranges from managing the end to end lifecycle of a vacancy such as advertising, sourcing and supporting internal projects. Our wider HR team are here to provide support across a number of roles, such as HR consultancy, business partnering, reward and more.
You may have some experience in HR or recruitment either in-house or from an agency, and if so, we’d love to hear from you.
Finance and Actuarial
We know this one is a little more niche – if you have some experience here, we’re often on the lookout for people with experience in an actuarial role. We also hire these roles on a trainee basis, open to everyone.
An actuary is someone who measures and evaluates financial risk and uncertainty, and are experts in using strong mathematical and statistical skills to support our business. This ranges from reporting and planning to communicating complex concepts and providing recommendations to multiple stakeholders. These roles often require analytical, communication and influencing skills.

The Phoenix Group diversity statement
Are you looking to try something new, make a career change or simply find out more about Phoenix? Could there be a place for you here but you aren’t sure if you meet all of the requirements? Are you worried about applying for a role with ‘normal’ office hours or a new location given your life and commitments outside of work?
We know that many people can sometimes feel put off from applying for a job if they don’t think they will receive the flexibility that they need, or that they don’t check every box on the advert. If that’s you, please don’t be put off from applying!
A key priority for us to ensure diversity at Phoenix, and we look to help the right person find the right role. This might be different hours, working from home or finding a pattern that works around your care responsibilities or life outside of work. It’s important to us that we balance our colleague’s needs with business and customer requirements, and whilst we can’t always accommodate every flexible request, we’ll always try to find something that works.
We’re also really proud of our nine colleague networks. The networks are open to everyone and are founded and run by colleagues, for colleagues. We currently have networks supporting our colleagues who are in the later stages of their careers, as well as the LGBT+ communities, Armed Forces, Carers, Disability, Mental Health, black, Asian and minority ethnic communities and our Young Professionals network.
