Real-life stories
Jacqueline's story
Before registering to work for TIB Services I was a Police Constable with Greater Manchester Police. I saw a magazine advertisement and having been interested/involved in numerous DIY projects during my lifetime, as a competent DIYer it looked just right up my street.
Having worked all my working life in the public sector in various forms, the transferable skills that I could bring were being able to communicate very well on all levels with all manner of people, in many different situations.
As a school caretaker, I have been responsible for unlocking and securing school premises, conducting various checks such as fire alarms, emergency lighting, school vehicles/minibuses, ladders and other equipment and also regular legionella water flushes, assisted in conducting risk assessments, setting up rooms for various activities, repairing and or replacing numerous bits of furniture, equipment, toilets, rooms, doors and redecorating classrooms.
At the school I am at currently, I work closely with the Schools Business Manager, contributing and suggesting ways in which the school can be more efficient in how, when and where certain tasks are completed, in order to help save the school some money.
I find it very rewarding working as a caretaker in schools, as the staff are very appreciative and even the pupils themselves appreciate my efforts in their own way. I feel that I am contributing in some positive way to the benefit of the school staff and pupils alike and I enjoy it. I am thoroughly enjoying the work, there’s no stress involved, and it’s a relaxed atmosphere most of the time.
The benefits of working for TIB are that everything is straightforward, the process of timesheets and payslips, is simple and communication is excellent, with regular updates. If anyone is thinking of something to do, while you are still able to, without too much responsibility or stress, and earn some money as you go, then I would certainly recommend you join TIB.
Feedback for Jacqueline from the Head teacher at the Lancaster Primary School:
“Jacs is doing a fantastic job, she is very organised, efficient, introduced new procedures & created a job list & schedule to follow, as she will be doing a job share. I have an excellent working relationship with her, she is punctual & will go the extra mile, I have had excellent feedback from other SLT & members of staff. Jacs are both doing a fantastic job, willing to adapt to what the school needs are, are extremely pro-active & come up with solutions not problems.”
Phil's story
How do you feel about going back to school?
I was apprehensive at first, as this was the first time I had returned to a school environment in five decades. I soon found that the routines were easy to adjust to, which were similar to my military background where everyday activities are very scheduled. I was particularly surprised by how much resource is provided in child welfare, which probably accounts for 40% of the school staffing budget.
What is your happiest memory from your own school days?
I left school to start work 54 years ago aged 15, which you could in the 60s. My happiest memories vary as we moved to various parts of the country through fathers work so had to readjust three times. The last few years were the most memorable as a teenager, where I made stable relationships.
How have you developed your DIY skills?
I started an apprenticeship at 16 in vehicle mechanics and followed this through with the Army in both mechanical and electrical engineering to HNC level. I am therefore used to working with tools and working in plantrooms and completing planned/reactive maintenance.
What appeals to you about supporting schools as a caretaker?
I currently have three grandchildren in school years 9, 8 and 6. Working as a school caretaker therefore allows me to gain a better understanding of how the education system works and appreciate how both teachers, pupils and parents interact in the modern era.
Why does flexible agency work appeal to you?
It allows me to take time out if needed for completing other work as and when.
Castell Alun High School's feedback on Phil:
“He has been amazing and a real help to us over the last few weeks. He has put 100% into everything we have asked him to do. I’ve had compliments from many members of staff on the improvement of the grounds at the front of school which Phil has tackled with gusto! He has also used his initiative a lot. If he’s had a spare minute he’s found something to get on with which is brilliant for us. I’d happily make a reference for him in the future and will gladly welcome him back here if and when the need arises again.”
