Work for United Response

Introduction to United Response

United Response is a charity that supports 2000 people with learning disabilities, autism or mental health needs in locations across England and South Wales. Our dedicated teams of support workers come from all walks of life, and help people with day-to-day living, finding a house or a job, education, and activities in their local community.

At the heart of what we do is ‘Person-centred support’. That’s all about customising the support we provide to each individual to ensure we’re meeting all of their needs. For people with more profound needs, our active support techniques make sure they are participants in all aspects of their lives rather than passive recipients of care, which makes for a very different working environment compared to many other social care settings.

This makes our services vibrant, friendly places to be, where we ask questions first before our determined teams set to work making ambitions happen.

Why we’re working with Rest Less

We’re working with Rest Less because we really think that the best teams are diverse teams. Many of the people we support are in the 50+ age bracket and having someone they can relate to and who can make introductions into the local community would make a huge difference to their lives.

Why work with United Response

Even if you haven’t done this kind of work before, we really value your life experience – whether that has been gained in other career paths, raising a family or in your hobbies and interests.

For example, one staff member used to be a pub landlord and so uses their ability to get along with everyone to make their service a great place to be. Someone else had a background in creative arts, so is a natural at making brilliant activities happen. If you’ve got a background in business, perhaps look out for our supported employment roles where we support people to prepare, search and thrive in the workplace.

Support work can also work well around other commitments – staff on part-time contracts or on relief (where you cover spare shifts when it suits you) have found it can be a flexible way to get back into employment.

Example roles at United Response

Support Worker

As a support worker, you’d be joining a small team that is 100% focused on understanding what makes the people with learning disabilities or autism in your service happy and healthy, and helping them achieve their ambitions. You might be helping people with household chores or shopping, personal care, attending appointments and socialising.

Some of the people we support attend college or are in employment or volunteering roles. People with more profound disabilities are supported to have choice and control over their lives. Full-time, part-time and relief contracts are available in most locations.

Student Support Teams

Our colleges support people with learning disabilities and autism to learn skills to set them up for life. If you have a background in education, you may be ideally suited to a new line of work supporting people with disabilities – we have a variety of roles available.

With your support, people will develop life skills such as employment, travelling or cooking, as well as Maths and English skills. Our colleges operate primarily in community rather than campus settings – so you’ll benefit from flexible, relaxed working environments that are focussed on achievement and growth

Mental Health Support Workers

United Response is a proud member of the West Sussex Pathfinder Alliance, supporting people with mental health needs, whether or not they have disabilities. We are looking for empathetic and compassionate individuals to join our Community Mental Health Service.

If you have experience of supporting people with mental health needs and access to a car to meet people in the community, this could be an ideal new role for you.

United Response diversity statement

United Response values and celebrates the diversity of its staff, the people we support and their families. We are committed to achieving a fully inclusive environment that is free from discrimination to ensure that everyone feels safe, supported and has their voice heard.

We have set up a forum and specialist interest groups on diversity so that all staff can have their say.

Our aim is to strengthen our commitment to diversity further by making sure that the demographic profile and characteristics of people who work at United Response are reflective of the communities we work within.
