What you'll be doing:

As a Design Engineer Apprentice you'll be the one who turns ideas for products or processes into designs. Working closely within a multifunctional team you'll generate detailed designs using 2D and 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems. You will need to select and define suitable materials, tolerances, processes and protective finishes giving consideration to the manufacture and lifecycle items.

Our military and commercial programmes require us to push our capabilities and technologies to the limit of what is achievable today. This raises many challenges for the system as it must ultimately meet both our customer's stringent safety requirements and bring leading edge performance to give competitive advantage wherever applied.

Successful applicants will form part of a multi-disciplined Engineering development team involved in the development, design, manufacture and test of a number of new and legacy munitions products for UK and export customers.

Specific activities could include:

  • Design of special purpose jigs, tools and gauges suitable for use with explosive items, including the design of pneumatic and hydraulic circuits, interlock systems and intrinsically safe circuits for process control.
  • Design of munitions and munition subsystems across a range of natures and calibres.
  • Generating design schemes, assemblies and detail drawings from either 3D solid CAD generated models, 2D CAD generated data or manual techniques.
  • Selecting and defining suitable materials, processes and protective finishes required to manufacture and assemble components.
  • Identifying and applying industry standards as appropriate.
  • Generating build standard definitions for products and operating configuration control techniques appropriately.
  • Carrying out Engineering calculations as required to inform and support a proposed design.
  • To support other functions in answering design/manufacturing enquires.
  • Gaining experience in placements outside Design Engineering such as production, project engineering and maintenance.
