Deputy Director Methods and Analysis Capability

The key focus of this role will be on leading a Division that produces relevant, high quality statistical methods and building statistical and methodological capability, covering people and systems in and beyond ONS. This is a critical leadership role and is responsible for using scarce public resources wisely to deliver change to increase innovation in official statistics. The successful candidate will need to bring considerable knowledge and expertise to the role to ensure the right focus, and to build a credible and authoritative approach that wins the confidence and support of key stakeholders.You will need to be relentless in your approach to delivering the expected benefits of capability development and resilient enough to overcome the constraints and hurdles impacting upon delivery. You will be sufficiently experienced as a leader to operate confidently in uncharted waters, to make critical and timely decisions and to seize opportunities as they arise. The successful candidate will need to combine a deep and inventive curiosity with strong adaptive skills and technical methodological knowledge.To be effective, you will have outstanding people skills, setting ambitious targets and expectations and supporting staff to be the best they can be. Implicit in this skill set will be managing the tensions between the wider organisational environment including, the controls and accountabilities necessary to demonstrate sound governance and the need to deliver with pace, challenging conventional practices. The successful candidate will have a background in the leadership of technical, analytical or scientific teams. You will understand the potential that the data revolution holds for official statistics, and how innovative methods combined with new and traditional data sources can produce a robust evidence base.
