Job Description
Drones or UAS are constantly in the headlines, and their importance to UK Defence is only growing. The UK in the recently published Defence Drone Strategy: The UKs Approach to Defence Uncrewed Systems highlighted that uncrewed technologies are forming an increasingly important part of the UKs force. It outlined the vision for the UK to be world-leading in uncrewed defence systems, using our considerable research, development, and manufacturing capabilities to safeguard national security and develop economic growth; protecting the nation and helping it prosper. The ASWC has changed 744 Naval Air Squadron (NAS) to be the Joint Uncrewed Air Systems Test and Evaluation Squadron (Jt UAS TES) from September 24. Its goal is to be MODs lead unit for trialling uncrewed air systems, with a Joint output reflecting positive relationships with the S&T and R&D communities. The Jt UAS TES will be one of two MOD units endorsed by the Military Aviation Authority (MAA) to conduct Cat 1-5 trials. With 700X NAS focussing on maritime and littoral UAS, the TES is the only joint unit and has a proven record of accomplishment in supporting all three environments. As the embedded analyst within 744, your prime responsibility will be to ensure that deep technical specialist support and robust scientific principles are applied to all trial design, execution, and analysis. To provide further support you will be encouraged to horizon-scan new technologies such as airborne autonomy and alternative navigation systems, as well as subsystems such as lightweight sensors. As the sole permanent analyst embedded within a primarily military team, largely working remotely from core ASWC Operational Research Branch (ORB) supervision and oversight, you will be required to be confident, persuasive, and self-starting, while recognising when wider technical engagement is required. The post is responsible to the ORB Senior Scientific Adviser, via Scientific Adviser (Development) and Operational Analyst Wide Area Surveillance.
