Introduction

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is looking to appoint a new Chair to the Board of UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) to fill a vacancy arising in February 2025.

Role description

The Framework Document (2023-2026) between the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) sets out the governance and accountability arrangements for UKAD.
The Chair has particular responsibility for providing strategic leadership on the
following matters:
  • Formulating UKAD's strategy for discharging its duties.
  • Ensuring high standards of propriety and governance.
  • Promoting the efficient and effective use of employees and other resources throughout the organisation.
  • Ensuring that UKAD, in reaching decisions, takes proper account of guidance provided by the Secretary of State or DCMS, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code and other relevant authorities.
  • Representing the views of UKAD to the public, key stakeholders, and the media, at home and overseas
  • Leading and developing the Board and providing an annual appraisal on each Board member.
  • Advising, developing, line managing and appraising the Chief Executive.

Organisation description

UKAD is an Executive Non-Departmental Public Body sponsored by DCMS.
UKAD is the United Kingdom's independent National Anti-Doping Organisation (NADO) set up in 2009. UKAD is responsible for the implementation of the Government's National Anti-Doping Policy for sport. Dedicated to protecting clean sport, it has established itself as a world leading NADO.
Using intelligence and investigations together with education and testing programmes, UKAD strives to promote clean sport and sport integrity, deter doping, and catch athletes and athlete support personnel who have committed Anti-Doping Rule Violations.

Person specification

Essential criteria

All candidates will need to demonstrate in their application that they meet the following essential criteria to a high standard:
  • A commitment and understanding of the need to protect clean sport and clean athletes and support sport integrity.
  • Senior leadership experience and the ability to lead strategic decision-making and planning at Board level.
  • A demonstrable understanding of the role of a regulator and operating within regulatory frameworks, and of the governance and accountability requirements placed on a public body.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and representational skills and the ability to influence a wide range of senior stakeholders.
  • A strong commitment to engaging communities outside of London, and factoring UK-wide perspectives into all decision making and a commitment to improving diversity and equality

Desirable criteria

Applications are particularly welcomed from individuals with knowledge and expertise in one or more of the following areas:
  • An understanding of the importance and effectiveness of anti-doping education initiatives
  • An understanding of the role of intelligence and investigations or enforcement as applied to anti-doping or sport.
  • An appreciation of the governance of sport across the United Kingdom.
  • Awareness of science, social science, technology, or AI as it applies to sport.
  • Experience in developing sponsorship, commercial or strategic partner arrangements.
