JOB TITLE: Head of Engineering/Engineering Lead - Digital Services lab
SALARY: £90,500pa to £144,000pa (dependant on location and experience) plus extensive benefits
LOCATION: London or Edinburgh
HOURS: 35 hours, full time
WORKING PATTERN: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days per week, or 40% of our time, at our London or Edinburgh offices.

We have a great opportunity for an Engineering Lead to be a senior level technical expert and leader with vision. We're looking for a curious person with a real passion for technology, a commitment to growth and development with experience of modern engineering methods and tooling. Enhancing the engineering experience and increasing pace is core aspect of our strategy to deliver great outcomes to our customers. Working in the API & Digital Services Lab, you'll take a leading role in enabling the Group's ambition by enabling our Group to modernise its digital capabilities whilst serving our current digital demand. You'll help with providing the foundational capabilities that enable our business platform customers to modernise their Digital channels and journeys, through the development of highly reusable API and SDK based systems of engagement & record, whilst providing a resilient, sustainable and performant platform.

What you'll be doing
As a platform, our purpose is to enable smarter API & System of Engagement led innovation tomorrow while ensuring resilient digital services today, and we do this by providing and evolving a set of highly reusable digital products that enable platforms to build journeys outside of our current digital platform where they can operate change independently whilst maintaining resilience 24/7. In this role, as a technology leader, you'll be setting the vision and mobilising the necessary teams to ensure a successful delivery. Your focus will be on enhancing the overall engineering experience. Day to day you'll:
Drive the engineering vision, set engineering standards, and solve the most complex technical challenges.
Lead the development of high-quality software products, ensuring they meet the highest standards of performance, security, and reliability.
Influence the technical direction of the organisation, mentor engineering teams, and ensure the delivery of robust, scalable, secure and innovative solutions.
Advise engineering teams and senior leadership.
Collaborate closely with product owners, architects, and other partners to prioritise and deliver the engineering roadmap.
Foster an engineering culture of experimentation, learning and continuous innovation.
Shape and contribute to the overall technical strategy.
Manage multiple change initiatives, including roadmaps, budgets, scheduling and resource assignment.
Stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends and technologies, continuously advancing the state of technology within the organisation.
What skills you'll need
Software Engineering - Possess a deep understanding of the software lifecycle, ensuring high standards in design, development, testing, and deployment.
Operational optimisation - Demonstrable experience of optimising Run operations for highly available systems, including control automation, end to end system monitoring and observability
Cloud Platform - Familiarity with the development of resilient systems on cloud platforms such as GCP, Azure or AWS.
End to end API design - demonstrable experience of managing and designing end to end API services (preferably REST) and SDKs. Understanding the intricacies and requirements associated with security, enterprise patterns and rate limiting.
Technology leadership - Capable of defining and maintaining engineering standards, aligning solutions with business objectives and architectural principles.
Technology delivery - Provide technology leadership across technical components and complex cross-cutting deliveries spanning multiple platforms and business units.
In addition any experience of these would be useful:
Leading and running enterprise-wide infrastructure platform upgrades and migrations to ensure a seamless transition and minimal disruption.
Ability to define objectives and measure metrics to optimise run and change processes.
Experience of DevOps Pipeline optimisation and developing embedded and dynamic controls.
