Job summary

The Major Trauma Rehabilitation service has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a part time Band 7 Advanced Occupational Therapist.

The position will provide specialist rehabilitation input to a 10 bedded inpatient unit, multidisciplinary (MDT) out-patient clinic and co-ordinate and write rehabilitation prescriptions for patients across the major trauma centre.

We would welcome candidates with experience of delivery specialist rehabilitation for patients with complex musculoskeletal and or neurological injuries. The successful applicant will work as part of an MDT consisting of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychology, dietetics, speech and language therapy, social work and consultant in rehabilitation medicine.

There will be a requirement to supervise junior staff, deliver in-service training, partake in clinical audit and service development.

The post has late shift, weekend and bank holiday commitment.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will work with the major trauma MDT to provide a high standard of occupational therapy care to non-complex, complex and highly complex patients within specialty evidencing high-level problem solving, reasoning skills and independence of judgement. They will work with a complex in-patient caseload, act as key worker for a designated caseload, complete rehabilitation prescriptions, carry out key worker follow up telephone reviews and review discharged patients within the major trauma out-patient clinic.

Job responsibilities

  • To provide a high standard of occupational therapy care to non-complex, complex and highly complex patients within specialty evidencing high-level problem solving, reasoning skills and independence of judgement.
  • The as Advanced OT will be a highly specialist practitioner and is the clinical lead for the Occupational Therapy Service within specialty providing highly specialist knowledge within the Trust and externally to therapists and other health care professionals from secondary and primary care across the region.

Person Specification

KNOWLEDGE

Essential

  • In-depth clinical knowledge of medical/neurological, conditions and their effect on occupational performance (master's level equivalent).
  • Highly developed understanding of OT process within acute setting.
  • In-depth knowledge of health and social care policy, risk assessment and management.
  • Extensive knowledge of a range of disability equipment.
  • Extensive knowledge of eligibility criteria and procedures/policies relevant to disability equipment, minor housing adaptations.
  • Highly specialist knowledge of moving and handling legislation and knowledge of current moving and handling best practice and associated equipment.
  • Excellent understanding of professional ethics and their application into practice.
  • Good knowledge of clinical governance.
  • Evidence of CPD.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of undertaking research and audit projects.
  • Knowledge of team dynamics and team building.

SKILLS

Essential

  • Good organisation, time management, problem solving and prioritisation skills.

EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Significant post-registration experience incl experience within physical health
  • Use of functional assessment and activity analysis.
  • Experience in supervising staff.

Desirable

  • Experience of working with patients with physical disability e.g. stoke, neuro, reduced mobility etc
  • Team management experience

QUALIFICATION

Essential

  • Degree/Diploma in OT
  • State registered with Health & Care Professions Council

Desirable

  • Member of BAOT
