Job summary

This post has been created to support the current General Surgery department. The post holder will be expected to work as a team, supporting and enhancing the already excellent department. The William Harvey Care Group consists of Urgent and Emergency Care, General Medicine, General Surgery, Colorectal, Gastroenterology and Endoscopy and Cardiology services at William Harvey Hospital (WHH).

Our surgical unit ranks highly in the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA) outcomes with some of the lowest mortality rates in the country, a reflection of the teamwork and support of the anaesthetic and critical care departments. The Department also boasts a very successful Surgical Same Day Emergency care (SDEC) that has helped deliver high quality and effective emergency and ambulatory care for our patients.

Main duties of the job

This post will lead to a total of eleven consultant surgeons within the department. This post will be required to be flexible to assist the speciality in delivering National Performance Standards.

Emergency General Surgery provision involves having Consultant Emergency Surgeon of the week (Monday-Thursday; 0800-1800 hrs) providing an emergency care model.

This post will alternate between an emergency week followed by weeks of elective activity.

The night on call (18.00-08.00 hrs) and weekend (Friday to Sunday) is covered by all surgeons with patient ownership on a rolling basis.

The Emergency week is based at the William Harvey Hospital. Elective commitments will be provided across our other Trust sites.

The successful candidate would be on a 10 PA contract with provision of higher PA on mutual agreement.

Qualifications and training

  • Full GMC Registration
