Job Description
Main duties and responsibilities To undertake comprehensive assessments using verbal and non-verbal communication skills, highly skilled physical examination, and manual assessment techniques. Using clinical reasoning skills you will provide accurate clinical diagnosis, agree physiotherapeutic goals and the physiotherapy treatment plan with the patient/carer. To work to CSP and HCPC code of professional conduct and to work within guidelines. To have a good working knowledge of national and local standards and monitor own and others quality of practice. To be responsible for maintaining own competency through Continuing Professional Development activities and maintaining a portfolio which reflects personal development and meets the HCPC standards. To maintain and develop current knowledge of evidence-based practice, developing specialist knowledge of conditions and patient types through in-service training, self-directed learning, tutorials, peer review and external courses. To hold responsibility for own specialist caseload and be responsible for a defined area of service / patient type working without direct supervision as an autonomous practitioner. To continuously assess and reflect on current practices and identify and lead on changes in clinical and working practices to ensure that recognised best practice is implemented. To challenge opinion and negotiate to manage conflict where other team members are involved. To demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance and risk management and apply to work situation e.g. lone working, manual handling, incidents, accident reporting. To participate in clinical supervision, peer support, staff appraisal and personal development plan. To supervise, educate and assess the performance of Physiotherapy students; this would involve working with universities and Trust Clinical Placement team to ensure the standard of practice and teaching meet standard set by the degree level qualification. To use own car to occasionally transport patients and carry equipment. Systems and equipment To input data on patient recording systems (currently Rio) within the timescales specified in the record keeping policy. To adhere to policies and procedures which ensure patient safety e.g. risk assessments, vulnerable adults, and infection control. Decisions and judgements To work autonomously with responsibility and accountability for the planning, prioritisation and management of own caseload and workload, including the allocation of appropriate duties to assistants, students, and admin staff where appropriate. To formulate accurate prognosis and recommend best course of intervention, developing comprehensive discharge plans. To implement, evaluate, analyse, and adjust treatment programmes according to the patient and carer needs, which may be highly complex. The frequent use of encouragement, motivation, negotiation, reassurance skills as well as discussing with clients/carers their progress will be essential. To re-evaluate patient conditions which may change because of pathological processes, aging, and the effects of treatment. To implement the audit cycle and use the results, current research, and government guidelines to recommend changes to service delivery and to clinical practice, demonstrating evidence-based link to the development and improvement of clinical practice. Communication and relationships To work closely with South East Staffordshire Community colleagues and in partnership with Primary Care networks, to provide a service in an integrated manner. To act as a source of spontaneous and planned clinical expertise, giving appropriate advice and guidance for the patient, carers and other professionals within health, education, social services, and the voluntary and private sectors, within safe practice guidance. Provide and receive complex information relating to patients diagnosis, treatment and long-term rehabilitation outcomes to patients, their carers and the multidisciplinary team. To use communication tools (verbal and nonverbal) to gain informed consent with patients where there may be difficulty with effective communication e.g. limited comprehension altered perception, pain, fear, and/or those who may be unable to accept diagnosis. To use highly developed communication skills to give both spontaneous and planned advice to disseminate sensitive and emotive information in such a way that the patient understands their diagnosis and expectations for independent function and to agree goals and gain co-operation in the ongoing treatment plan. This may be with reference and sensitivity to cultural, religious, and emotional barriers and needs. To contribute to team meetings, huddles, goals, and objectives.
