Job Description
Clinical responsibilities The post is a general Haematology post covering all areas of district general Haematology practice. However, a sub-specialist interest would be expected to complement the sub-specialist interests of the existing Haematology Consultant establishment. The appointee will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high quality care to patients presenting to the department with haematological disorders To diagnose and treat both inpatients and outpatients under the care of the department To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff To provide on call support out of hours to Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. To remain contactable and available when on call. Liaise and provide advice to other clinicians, other hospital staff and general practitioners about haematological conditions Laboratory responsibilities To share responsibility for the diagnostic services with the other Consultant Haematologists including laboratory and diagnostic tests and their interpretation To advise and liaise with other hospital clinicians and primary care regarding laboratory results and their interpretation Education and training The appointee will be expected to take a full role in undergraduate teaching, including clinical meetings and medical undergraduate tutorials. The Department is actively involved in providing pathology teaching to 4rd Year Bristol medical students. The appointee will also be expected to assist in the training of technical and scientific staff To assist and participate with the development of postgraduate training for F1s, F2s, StRs, and other staff as appropriate Where agreed, to act as Educational Supervisor to junior and middle grade medical staff, being responsible for their appraisal and personal development planning. Other Responsibilities To remain up to date and engaged in CME/CPD as per RCPath guidelines The post holder will be expected to take part in developing clinical audit in accordance with agreed Directorate and Corporate Clinical Governance programmes. Research The post holder will be encouraged to be active in clinical research, particularly with reference to active recruitment of patients to clinical trials held on the local clinical trials portfolio. A mentoring scheme for new consultant staff is well established and each new appointee will be appointed a mentor shortly after appointment.
