Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities Professional Practice at all times within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct To provide high quality supervision to staff in order to maintain and improve quality of services provided to children and families in need. To formally record the supervision sessions. To work in conjunction with the Named Nurse and safeguarding team to review and update policies and procedures. To contribute to quality, audit and monitoring procedures. To act as a resource to staff in terms of support, information and advice. To contribute to the development of effective communication systems within the Trust and other agencies. Management Provide specialist advice and support to all staff within the Trust on safeguarding issues, policies, procedures and clinical practice. Collaborate with key professionals in the development and implementation of safeguarding policies, procedures and practice guidance as appropriate within the Trust and ensure that they are updated to reflect both recent evidence based changes in practice and those brought about by government policy and legislation. Participate in the development of relevant multi-agency policy, procedure and practice guidance. Effect change within own sphere of practice when and where indicated. Making recommendations to improve services. Influencing, motivating, supporting and enabling others to contribute towards the effectiveness and success of Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Trust. To liaise with professionals from partner agencies on behalf of staff, when appropriate Exercise leadership and aim to achieve high morale by efficient management skills, good staff relationships and clear lines of communication. To work closely with staff responsible for vulnerable children case management, to provide an independent and objective overview in order to enhance protection of both service users and staff. Assist in the Serious Case Review process, specifically in the implementation of the findings and recommendations across the trust. This will also include the learning from internal management reviews. Advise, direct and support staff in the preparation of written reports in relation to formal child protection procedures and legal proceedings. Support and advise staff when attending court for safeguarding cases. Prioritise and manage workload in the light of the unpredictable nature of child protection issues and enquiries arising, which result in frequent interruption requiring immediate response and intense concentration. Clinical Ensure that safeguarding procedures are followed. To identify and address areas of poor or unsafe child protection/ safeguarding practice and highlight identified risks as appropriate. Collect and collate information / data as and when required. Manage the risk to the organisation in respect of legal contributions to care proceedings by monitoring the quality of reports and ensure that they are prepared to a satisfactory standard within the time scales required by the court. Support staff involved in the child protection process by preparation for and attendance at initial / review child protection case conferences, strategy meetings and other multi agency meetings. Evaluate, assess and direct staff in the management of safeguarding children cases. Ensure that an effective system of child protection supervision is implemented for staff within the Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Trust and provide clinical supervision in accordance with safeguarding procedures. Engage in peer safeguarding supervision in order to debrief and protect self from emotional effects of complex, emotive and distressing child abuse cases. Adhere to Local Safeguarding Children Board and internal Trust Safeguarding policies and procedures. Accept safeguarding information on families transferring into the Trust area from health agencies outside of the Trust, and allocate appropriately to staff whilst GP or School registration is finalised. Provide a contact point for local and national A&E departments to refer paediatric concerns and disseminate referrals to appropriate professionals within the defined area of the Trust, in conjunction with the Child Health Department. Assist Trust staff in learning how to identify children at risk of significant harm and where necessary referring the child to appropriate agencies / services Collate, present and receive information about Domestic violence and attend both single and multiagency meetings where necessary. Provide safeguarding advice, guidance and support to Trust staff supporting victims of Domestic violence where children are involved. Work in a multiagency setting, team or HUB or rotate into such where necessary. Non Clinical Working with the Named Nurses, Safeguarding Specialist Nurses and the Safeguarding Administrators operate and manage the safe and effective receipt and transfer of all records where there are safeguarding concerns within the Trust and maintain accurate data to ensure accountability at all times. Devise and use administration systems and processes, both paper based and IT, to process, generate, update and store patient information relating to child protection issues Training and Education Working with the Named Nurse. Advise managers of identified training needs for staff and self. As part of the safeguarding service devise, develop and deliver multi-disciplinary safeguarding training Trust wide. Ensure that training and practice is evidence based. Be involved in a range of safeguarding training events. Assume responsibility for the maintenance of own professional knowledge and utilise a reflective and analytical approach to practice. Willingness to undertake further child protection/ safeguarding related study. Develop and maintain a safeguarding resource system within the service. Research and Audit Working with the Named Nurse. Actively audit and monitor safeguarding practice for frontline workforce. Ensure robust links with the clinical governance lead for the organisation in all aspects of safeguarding practice. Participate and lead (where appropriate) in specific aspects of quality assurance within the area of safeguarding. Participate in record keeping and report writing audits both within the Trust and on a multi-agency basis where applicable. Work in conjunction with the Named Nurse to ensure the implementation of recommendations from serious case reviews and internal management reviews to help minimise risk areas for the Trust. Communication Work in collaboration with the Named Nurse to interpret and advise on the national and local policy documents. Maintain effective working partnerships within the key agencies in safeguarding children including Social Services, Police, Health agencies, Probation, Education, Specialist and Voluntary agencies within the local authority. Provide and receive highly complex, highly sensitive and highly contentious information where there are significant barriers to acceptance from clients which need to be overcome using the highest level of interpersonal and communication skills e.g. in hostile, antagonistic and highly emotive atmosphere of child protection case conferences and multi-disciplinary meetings. Attend meetings as required on behalf of the Named Nurse. The postholder must not; either during the course of their employment, or following termination of their employment, disclose any information relating to service users or employees, or of the lawful business practices, of the organisation. The postholder will be required, when and where appropriate to the role, to comply with the processing of requests under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 The postholder must comply with Trust policies that protect the information assets of the organisation from unauthorised disclosure, modification, destruction, inappropriate access or use and must pay due regard to the requirements of the NHS Confidentiality Code of Practice. The postholder will be responsible for maintaining the clinical and or corporate records that fall within the remit of this role to the standards in Trust records management policies, and data quality processes and standards.
