Winterton Medical Practice JOB DESCRIPTION POSITION: Surgical Unit Nurse ROLE: To provide safe, effective nursing services for patients attending the Surgical Unit. ACCOUNTABLE TO: The partners and the NMC RESPONSIBLE TO: Practice Manager KEY TASKS The post holder will be responsible for the day to day running of the Surgical Unit theatre sessions and will: 1) Ensure the efficient day to day running of the Surgical Unit 2) Prepare the environment and equipment necessary for a given list of surgical procedures along with the HCA. 3) Check the temperature and humidity prior to each theatre session and ensure this is recorded on the Intradoc logs. The recommended levels are: a. Temperature 20-24 degrees centigrade (ambient 21 degrees) b. Humidity 40 60% humidity 4) Assist the Surgeon during Minor Surgical procedures and prepare the equipment/trolley needed for each procedure. 5) Ensure adequate cleaning of equipment after each patient / session along with the HCA, duties divided as follows: a. HCA Responsibilities i. Discharge Patient ii. Clean Room 10, 5 and Changing Room iii. Bring through next patient b. Theatre Scrub Nurse Responsibilities i. Used Equipment disposed of into waste ii. Patient Couch wiped down for next patient iii. Surgical Trolley cleaned and equipment laid out for next procedure iv. Retrieve gown and gloves ready for scrubbing for the next procedure for scrub nurse and consultant. 6) Prepare injections required for each procedure. 7) Check and ensure Defibrillator equipment is fully charged. 8) Monitor oxygen levels and ensure this is replenished when falls below half. 9) Check Resus trolley regularly to ensure this remains fully stocked and medication is in date and stored at appropriate temperatures. 10) Participate in the induction and training of new staff in the Unit and support and educate junior staff. 11) Develop junior members of staff to enable them to assist the Surgeon during Minor Surgical procedures 12) Regularly review all patient information sheets and update as necessary. 13) Liaise with Surgical Unit Administrator regarding operating lists and patient enquiries. 14) Ensure all waste from theatre sessions is disposed of appropriately and clean up theatre area. 15) Wipe down any equipment / couch used post theatre session, put away equipment used and leave the theatre environment safe and clean after each list with the assistance of the HCA. Liaise with theatre team to divide duties and ensure the theatre team work together to leave the theatre environment as found in readiness for the cleaning team. 16) Read and record fridge temperatures on a regular basis and download fridge data logger stick to monitor and ensure fridge temperatures remain within safe limits and take any necessary action if temperatures fall outside the documented range. 17) Maintain adequate stock levels, including rotation of stock and check drug expiry dates. Responsible for: a. Monitoring adequate stock levels and updating stock spreadsheet b. Ensuring the theatre stock sheet corresponds with location of stock in cupboards to ensure this is easily locatable for the rest of the theatre team. c. Ensure cupboards are clearly labelled with stock held within for easy location. d. Rotation of stock and checking expiry dates e. Arranging order of stock needed. This should be passed to the stock order administrator (Charlotte) by email each week detailing what stock needs ordering. Charlotte will order and update the stock spreadsheet to indicate what orders have been placed and awaited. f. On arrival of new stock, organise for this to be put away within theatre & take off stock spreadsheet marked as orders awaited. i. When putting stock away ensure this is stored in the appropriately labelled cupboards and no stock is stored on work surfaces or the floor for infection control purposes. g. Once stock is stored away ensure all work surfaces are clear for easy cleaning. 18) Undertake annual stock checks for the stock take. 19) Review surgical protocols annually and update as necessary. 20) Follow up patients who have had a hernia procedure performed to review post operatively. PROFESSIONAL The practice nurses will: 1) Ensure accurate contemporaneous electronic and paper patient records are kept for each contact. 2) Be aware of, and work in accordance with, all practice policies and protocols relevant to nursing. 3) Identify their own training needs and actively participate in any training identified as being necessary by their manager or employer. 4) Participate in the training of new nursing/HCA staff. 5) Attend staff meetings, to maintain adequate communication. 6) Participate in staff development and performance review. 7) Report to Practice Manager/Assistant Practice Manager any complaint, accidents, or any untoward incidents. 8) Work at all times in accordance with the NMCs code of professional conduct and the scope of professional practice. PERSONAL Practice nurses will: 1) Be aware of, and work in accordance with the health and Safety at Work Act, thereby working in a safe efficient manner. 2) Adhere to the uniform policy of the practice, always having a neat and tidy appearance. 3) Work hours as per duty rota and extra hours by mutual agreement, to meet the demands of the practice. 4) Perform their duties in a calm, professional and competent manner. 5) Maintain membership with the NMC and ensure revalidation is completed every 3 years. 6) Participate in annual appraisals.
