SHROPSHIRE COUNCIL Tuition, Medical & Behaviour Support Service (Pupil Referral Unit) JOB DESCRIPTION Details of Post Designation: Post Number (s): Scale: Salary Range: Hours: Contract: Location: General Information Learning Mentor Grade 7 Point 12 to 17 - pro rata 30 hours per week - term time only Permanent contract Monday to Friday based at Sundorne Education Centre but might be asked to work in other centres as required The appointment is to the Tuition, Medical & Behaviour Support Service (TMBSS) which provides education, based at seven Education Centres, for students who, by reason of illness, exclusion or otherwise, are being educated out of school. The Service caters for students in KS1 to KS4 who have a wide range of needs. It also provides teaching support in two hospitals, individual teaching and shared placement provision for students in mainstream schools. Children are referred via a Multi-agency panel. The main work of the Service is to include and reintegrate into a mainstream school where possible, or work towards a suitable long-term placement. The purpose and function of the Service is to provide alternative education packages for KS1 to KS4 students who are unable to maintain their full-time placement in mainstream school. The Service works in partnership with mainstream schools, providing an intensive intervention and assessment package working towards full reintegration. The main focus of the Service lies in promoting positive behaviour and attitudes to learning for students who are currently having difficulty or who are at risk of exclusion. At KS4 the Service focus is to support students through full-time programmes including GCSE, work experience and vocational courses. The post is allocated to Sundorne Education Centre which is a KS3/4 Centre, but the Executive Headteacher can ask the applicant to work at any of the other Education Centres according to current needs. Applicants should be committed to the education of students with Special Needs. They should hold a current Full UK Driving Licence. Job Description - Learning Mentor TMBSS MAIN PURPOSE OF POST The main purpose of the post is to work alongside teaching staff delivering educational programmes to students, including core subjects, reintegration and sports and leisure activities. In addition, work under the guidance of the teaching staff, and within an agreed system of supervision, to implement agreed work/care/support programmes with individuals or groups, in or out of the classroom. This could include those students requiring detailed and specialist knowledge in particular areas, and those who need particular help to overcome barriers to learning. This would involve working with a group of students, leading on a therapeutic session. Assistance will be provided to teachers over the whole planning cycle, and with the management and preparation of equipment and resources. In addition, the professional work of teachers will be complemented by taking responsibility for specific learning activities under an agreed system of supervision. This may involve planning, preparing and delivering learning activities/groups and monitoring students and assessing, reporting on students' achievements, progress and development. recording and PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Supporting the Student • Attend to students' personal needs and assist with the development and implementation of Individual/Behaviour/Support/Mentoring Plans and Personal Care Programmes/Strategies. • Take a lead role in the supervision and support of students with special needs and manage the supervision of those excluded from, or otherwise not working to, a normal timetable, ensuring their safety and access to learning. • To work with group of students and lead on a therapeutic session. • Establish supportive, constructive relationships with students and interact with them according to individual needs. • Encourage acceptance and integration of the student with Special Needs. • Encourage students to interact and work co-operative with others and engage in learning activities. • Set challenging and demanding expectations and promote self-esteem and independence. • Provide feedback to students in relation to progress, achievement, behaviour, attendance etc. • Use specialist skills/training/experience to assess the needs of students and support their learning. • Take a lead role in managing and delivering pastoral support to students and assist in their social, health, and hygiene development. • Arrange and develop one-to-one mentoring arrangements with students. • Take a lead role in managing the speedy/effective transfer of students across phases/integration of those who have been absent. • Provide information and advice to enable students to make choices about their own learning/behaviour/attendance. • To support and transport the student as directed on work experience, college link placements and sport and leisure activities. • To develop methods of promoting/reinforcing students' self esteem. Job Description - Learning Mentor TMBSS • Where appropriate to develop a relationship to foster links between home and school. • To liaise, advise and consult with other members of the team supporting the student. • Taking into account the special needs involved, to aid the student to learn effectively as possible both in group situations and on his/her own by, for example: - - - - clarifying and explaining instructions; ensuring the student is able to use equipment and materials provided; motivating and encouraging student as required; assisting in weak areas e.g. language, behaviour, reading, spelling, handwriting/presentation etc. helping student to concentrate on and finish work set; meeting physical needs as required whilst encouraging independence - - - Supporting the Teacher • Work with the teacher in lesson planning, evaluating, and adjusting lessons/work plans as appropriate. • Use strategies, in liaison with the teacher, to support students to achieve learning goals. • Prepare the classroom as directed for lessons and clear afterwards. Assist with the display of students' work. • Ensure the timely and accurate design, preparation, and use of specialist equipment/resources/materials. • Monitor and evaluate students' responses to learning activities through observation and planned recording of achievement against pre-determined learning objectives and feedback to teacher accordingly. • Provide the teacher with objective and accurate feedback and reports as required, on student achievement, progress and other matters, ensuring the availability of appropriate evidence. • Manage the compilation of records, information, and data, and produce reports for analysis. • Administer and assess routine tests, examinations (including invigilation), undertake routine marking of students' work, and accurately record achievement/progress. • Promote positive values, attitudes and good student behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encourage students to take responsibility for their own behaviour. • Establish constructive relationships with parents/carers as agreed with the teacher, exchanging information, facilitating their support for their child's attendance, access and learning, and supporting home to school and community links. • Provide general clerical/administrative dealing with correspondence, analysing data on attendance/exclusions etc administering coursework, producing worksheets for agreed activities, photocopying, typing, filing etc support, eg • Take a lead role in the development, implementation, and monitoring of systems relating to attendance and integration eg, registration, truancy, pastoral systems etc. • Manage liaison with feeder schools and other relevant bodies to gather student information. Job Description - Learning Mentor TMBSS • Take a lead role in the development and implementation of appropriate behaviour management strategies Support for the Curriculum • Support students in understanding instructions. • Implement structured and agreed learning activities/teaching programmes, adjusting activities according to student responses. Implement local and national learning strategies eg, literacy, numeracy, as directed by teachers. • • Support students in using ICT and develop students' competence and independence in its use. • Determine the need for, prepare and use specialist equipment/resources as directed by the teacher, and assist students in their use. • Be responsible for the management of stock levels, including the management of a budget and the regular audit of resources. • Actively seek information regarding, and utilise, the range of activities, courses, organisation, and individuals to provide support for the students to broaden and enrich their learning. Supporting the Service • Comply with and assist with the development of policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person. • Be aware of and support difference and ensure that students have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop. • Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school. • Establish relationships and communicate with other agencies/professionals, in liaison with the teacher, to support the achievement and progress of the students. constructive • Support the development of multi-agency approaches to supporting students. ...
