In the Jewish religion there is a tradition that when someone dies the visitors bring food as the last thing any grieving family members want to be doing is shopping and cooking. It is a practical tradition and I have adopted it.

minutesI have also used an old Jewish recipe for Rosh Hashanah Honey Cake which everyone loves and as honey is meant to be very soothing then a slice of this cake, served with a cup of tea, is perfect in these situations.
Ingredients
170g clear honey
140g butter
85g light muscovado sugar
2 eggs beaten
200g self-raising flour
- Icing
55g icing sugar
1 tbsp clear honey
Hot water
Directions
- Butter an 18cm cake tin and line the bottom. Put the honey, butter & sugar into a pan. Add 1 tbsp water. Heat until melted. Remove from heat. Mix in eggs and flour and pour into the cake tin. Smooth the top. Bake for 40/45 mins at 180°.
- For the icing: Mix the sugar, honey & up to 3 tsp hot water. Pierce the cake and trickle the icing over the cake.
Notes
- If served warm it is even more delicious!
