One-Off Practical Volunteer (Film Archive Volunteer)

RSPB

Job Description

We are looking for volunteers to join our Brand Team to assist us with an important project involving the RSPB's historic collection of Natural History Film and Video.

Our archive holds a wide range of material spanning nearly 75 years, dating back to the post-war period. The films we hold are a rich and unique source of social history of conservation and provide visual evidence of what can be achieved for nature through scientific study, perseverance, and the support of RSPB members. We are looking for volunteers to play a key role in helping the RSPB to preserve this important archive and increase its visibility.

As part of a team of volunteers, this role will involve:

- Organisation of material including paperwork, film reels and equipment.

- Scanning documents for long term storage and preservation

- Assessing the condition of film and video materials and recycling those which need to be disposed of.

Our ideal volunteers will bring:

- Organisational skills

- Ability to work independently and as part of a team

- An excellent eye for detail

- A passion for archives or film and video

This role is site-based at RSPB The Lodge, Sandy, and flexibility to fit around your schedule is available but as we'd like to make quick progress, a 3-hour volunteering session once every two weeks for a period of approximately 6 months would be the minimum commitment required. Candidates will be interviewed, providing an opportunity to discuss alternative working patterns. Volunteers will be provided with full training and will be reimbursed for travel expenses.

This could be the perfect opportunity for you if you have an interest in history or wildlife filmmaking, or if you are looking for experience in working with archival material. You may also come from a similar working background and would like to bring your knowledge. You will gain experience in the UK's largest nature conservation charity as a part of a friendly and supportive team.
