Volunteer Community Speaker for Alzheimers Research UK

Alzheimers Research UK

Job Description

Are you looking for a new volunteering opportunity? Volunteering with Alzheimer's Research UK as a Community Speaker is a great way to enhance your CV, meet new people and gain a new experience whilst supporting our mission to find a cure for dementia.

You will help engage your local community with the work we do. You'll find local groups to approach, then you'll deliver a talk about dementia and the power of research to find a cure.

What you will be doing

  • Research groups in your area who might be open to you coming to talk to them. For example, Rotary Clubs, W.I.'s etc.
  • Approach those groups to arrange a presentation.
  • Deliver talks to groups in your region. Mainly face-to-face, but could be online.
  • You may be presented with a donation for the charity at the end of your talk.
  • Update your local Regional Fundraising Officer regularly.
  • Occasionally you may be asked to attend a cheque presentation on our behalf. Or attend a local event to say thanks to donors for their support.

When and where

  • Community Speakers can be based anywhere across England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland.
  • We'll provide you with full training on how to carry out the role. This training is normally delivered on a one-to-one basis either online or in person, so can be arranged at a mutually convenient time with your local Regional Fundraising Officer.
  • You'll need to spend some time researching groups you would like to approach. This can be done at any time to fit your schedule.
  • You will need to call or email the groups to arrange talks. Again, this can be done around your other commitments.
  • The days and times you deliver talks will depend on when your local groups meet, and when you are available.
  • We would like Community Speakers to deliver several talks a year.
  • You will be in control of who you approach. So how far you travel to deliver a talk is up to you.

The skills you need

  • Proactive approach
  • Able to carry out your own research into local groups
  • Confidence to speak in front of others
  • Good communication skills
  • I.T. literate with ability to use a laptop or tablet, and work a PowerPoint presentation, would be helpful. But you could deliver talks without a presentation if not.
  • Able to interact politely with members of the public, other volunteers, and staff.
  • Reliable

The benefits for you

  • Full training and a ready-made presentation will be provided.
  • You'll be fully supported by your local Regional Fundraising Officer.
  • We can reimburse reasonable out-of-pocket expenses such as travel to a venue, when agreed in advance.
  • Use existing skills or develop new ones like communication, public speaking, fundraising and organisation.
  • You'll help tackle the misunderstandings and stigma that surround dementia.
  • Your support will bring us closer to finding a cure for dementia.
  • We will ask you what you think, listen to what you have to say, and value your feedback.
