About the role

Balfour Beatty is currently recruiting a Senior Civil Design Engineer (Substations) to join the Power T&D team.

Role purpose:

To work with project team, designers, and subcontractors through the design phase to deliver the safe and suitable scope of works in line with the project objectives. Take responsibility for the design delivery and design suitability for works across Power T&D construction projects with particular focus on Substations Civils delivery. Provide advice as to the constructability and sequencing of civil design and temporary works designs for Power T&D business. Engage in bid development, tendering and innovation projects alongside the Design Lead and Design Delivery Manager.

What you'll be doing

Key Accountabilities:

  • To undertake the design and co-ordination of civil designs required on substation projects, from the initial feasibility assessment through to detail design, installation, and final removal.
  • Ensure the timely delivery and quality of designs including preparation of reports, calculations and drawings to a high technical level which are compliant with the required Client and national technical standards (BS/Eurocodes/ENA).
  • Understand and be able to capture Client requirements, including those not explicitly stated within the contract. Able to contribute to the generation of robust pricing and design delivery solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

To assess and identify design and temporary works requirements on each project. Including:

  • Undertake reinforced concrete design and detailing compliant to required Client & national technical standards (BS/Eurocodes/ENA)
  • Analysis of existing foundations.
  • Construction site layouts and CDM implementation
  • Undertake check function for design calculations performed by other engineering colleagues.
  • Assist in the management of the tender process, understand and interpret scope of works, provide advice and opinion
  • Where appropriate and required act as Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE) or equivalent role.
  • Support the provision of designs, volumes and quantities as required for tender submissions such that upon contract award, the budget, programme and specification can be achieved.
  • Working closely with Project Teams to determine and maintain common objectives and to ensure work undertaken is appropriate and in accordance with project priorities.
  • Liaise with appropriate personnel to achieve optimum installation procedures. Undertake site visits as necessary to plan and inspect foundation and other civil works.
  • Embed Safety by Design principles in all activities, including managing safety through appropriate life cycle designs that minimise risks to personnel and property, by ensuring that Health & Safety Regulations and Balfour Beatty procedures and requirements are followed in the design of civil substation works.
  • Analyse contract documents to ensure correct interpretation of customers/consultants intentions.
  • Correspond as directed with the Business Units, customer, consultant, vendor (sub-contractor) to ensure the achievement of satisfactory progress and quality. Visit sites and offices to discuss and solve problem issues, as appropriate.
  • Assist in training of new designers and/or trainees.
  • Undertake other such duties as may be required by the Design lead or Design Manager.
  • Maintain compliance of CDM regulations and all other legal and regulatory requirements associated with the nature of designs output by the team.

Who we're looking for

Skills Required:

  • Degree level education or equivalent with formal training in civil engineering, structural engineering and/or geotechnical engineering.
  • Professional membership with either the ICE or IStructE & working towards Chartered Engineer status.
  • Strong, proven post-graduate experience in the civil engineering industry
  • Experience of the supervision of sub-consultants or subcontractors
  • Proven experience of the design of civil engineering works and/or civil design of substations
  • Strong, proven experience of the management of design of civil or geotechnical engineering works
  • IT Literate (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, CAD)
  • Good knowledge and experience of applying National Grid Technical Specifications and Design Handbooks
  • Strong understanding of BIM principals (PAS1192 and ISO16950)

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in the design and checking for civil engineering projects
  • Experience of substation structural components
  • Experience of drainage design and water management
  • Revit, Civil 3D, Microdrainage software usage
