Job Description

The post holder will: Be accountable for their practice and role modelling the highest standards of care to all members of the Endoscopy team, working in the clinical setting, maintaining and enhancing the skill mix. Be responsible for ensuring staff achieve their local induction and clinical competencies. To submit an annual Training Needs Analysis, proceed to request funded training. Following this training to assess and monitor the competence of staff that have been in receipt of funded education by the Trust to evaluate the return on investment and effectiveness of courses. Assess and monitor the competence of staff whose performance does not meet required levels. Assess, implement and evaluate the standards of care required for medical patients to ensure patient safety and quality of care, working with the lead nurse to identify and resolve failures in standards of care and the care environment. Develop and ensure clinical protocols for practice are evidence based and updated regularly taking into account new research Lead in the development, review and formulation of clinical guidelines, policies and protocols relating to specific aspects of care of patient care Actively contribute to local audits against quality performance standards and contribute to action planning to address gaps found Contribute to the review and development of hospital wide nursing procedures and guidelines. To organise and maintain accurate records of provided training/CPD, including individual and larger group workshops. Be a point o contact for external agencies and training providers. Support systems for sharing good practice within Endoscopy and Trust-wide. Attend and participate in Trust and Directorate meetings as required for the post Management To lead and be responsible for ensuring newly appointed staff have achieved their local induction within a set time frame. Act as a role model in providing leadership, motivation and vision to contribute to the development of skills and expertise. Work closely with the Endoscopy Clinical Operations Manager, Endoscopy Compliance Operational Manager, Endoscopy Lead Nurse, Ward Managers, Endoscopy Clinical Lead and Consultants within gastroenterology and Endoscopy to determine units priorities, introduce new initiatives and implement change in order to develop the departments profile and improve patient care. Ensure compliance to Trust policies and procedures by the multi-disciplinary teams Contribute to investigations of incidents and complaints relating to patients/clients, implementing and monitoring action plans as necessary Work within budgetary confines of the Directorate Assist in exploring more efficient and effective ways of providing a high standard of patient care and utilisation of resources (skills and knowledge) Be aware of national drivers and policies in relation to patient care Contribute to business, professional, strategic planning, strategies, policies and guidance for the delivery of high quality care within the department and across the Trust Contribute to the recruitment and retention of staff Negotiate with external agencies to improve the quality of patient care. This is to include collaboration with other Endoscopy units and the local universities. To support the Band 6 in their role as clinical leads in Endoscopy. Education Promote a clinical environment that is conducive to learning, demonstrating effective communication and interpersonal skills and that the environment meets the NMC standards for Pre-registration students. In collaboration with the Lead Nurse and clinical sisters/charge nurse review and identify the education, training and development needs of all staff involved in Endoscopy procedures and the care of patients. Lead in planning, developing and facilitating educational training programmes for those delivering care to patients in critical care, to meet the needs as identified. Provide a structured and innovative local induction programme for new clinical staff ensuring that their competencies are assessed and Personal Development Plans are in place and reviewed during their induction period. Provide supervision and mentorship underpinned by theoretical specialist knowledge and practical experience within Endoscopy to support staff. In partnership with the senior nursing staff ensure that the Training Needs Analysis of all staff is conducted and incorporated into the Directorate contracts. Identifies own Personal Development needs, clinical competencies deficits, education and development needs at own appraisal, demonstrating alignment with Trust corporate objectives and utilising SMART principles. Participate in the facilitation of hospitalwide education programmes, especially Endoscopy programmes. Liaise with other professional colleagues to encourage multi-disciplinary training and education. Help with the maintenance of staff training records in accordance with Trust protocols and JAG. Ability to empower others to make critical and timely decisions in challenging and difficult clinical situations. Ability to competently assess RGN, NA, CSW & AP in the care of patients undergoing procedures within Endoscopy and X-ray. Ensure that a sufficient number of Mentors are available and that these mentors are updated annually and have completed their triennial review. Maintain and update a staff skills matric of competencies and training resources, whilst overseeing a high compliance of department Mandatory training requirements. To partake in a collaborative practice with the Bedford Hospital Endoscopy Clinical Trainer, to attend meetings and when relevant to share training opportunities with the Bedford Endoscopy team. Support lead nurse for the educational audit Support the education and development of all staff including students, ensuring all staff have a Personal Development Plan and meet their personal objectives. Encourage reflective practice and actively participates for self or others. Communication Promote effective communication between members of multi-disciplinary teams within the organisation and with external stakeholders to ensure that care of patients is delivered both effectively and efficiently to ensure that continuity of care is maintained Contribute to the development of effective methods of communication within teams. Attend and contribute in team/multi-disciplinary meetings Demonstrates proactive communication with all staff on the clinical condition and treatment/discharge/transfer plans of patients Actively demonstrates to staff how to involve patients, relatives and carers in the treatment and care Maintain an effective working relationship with the medical and nursing ward teams within the medical directorate Professional Lead the development of working groups and project teams to provide expertise and specialist knowledge in relation to Endoscopy, ensure feedback is provided to all colleagues in the directorate. Establish and maintain professional net working relationships with all relevant professionals agencies and organisations. Ensure clinical audit JAG is conducted appropriately; all results are fed back at Directorate and Trust audit meetings, all appropriate actions as a result of the audit carried out in a timely manner. Ensure the accurate input of data to IT systems and that where applicable data is comprehensively analysed. Promote, encourage and participate in research, within Endoscopy. Assist Endoscopy Clinical Operations Manager, Endoscopy Compliance Operational Manager, Lead Nurse and Clinical Lead in the recognition and implementation of changes within Endoscopy, JAG and National Frameworks in relation to Gastroenterology. Promote and develop the implementation of research-based practice To ensure a high compliance within JETS Workforce amongst the Endoscopy staff team. This can be commenced as part of the initial induction process and will include e-lfh ENDO modules 1-3, assisting individuals to create JETS Workforce Accounts, peer reviewing DOPS, producing witness statements, competency assessing and supporting colleagues to produce reflective accounts. This responsibility also encapsulates arranging off site / online ENDO 1 courses and for correct governance specific digital records / resources. Health, Safety and Security In conjunction with the ward teams, ensure equipment is maintained and used correctly. Ensure staff are aware of their personal responsibilities in attending both induction and statutory training programmes. Personal Development Maintain personal and professional status by ensuring own development meets the requirements of the NMC and of the post Update own knowledge and skills in order to develop professionally and to contribute to improvements in the service Participate in own annual appraisal and agree a Personal Development Plan in line with set objectives Maintain professional portfolio demonstrating own competence, identifying areas for further development and improving competence.
