Job Description

Kings College NHS Health Centre provides services for the staff and students at the College. It opened in September 2001 and has grown to about 23,500 patients. Kings is a large multi-faculty College of the University of London with a total student population of approximately 38,000 and operates on several campuses including the Strand, Waterloo, Guys and St. Thomas. The Health Centre provides a student focused NHS health service and is based at the Strand campus. It is part of a comprehensive student service provision within the College which includes counselling, psychotherapy, psychiatric, advice, accommodation and careers advisory services. The Centre uses SystmOne clinical system and has a website: www.kclnhshealthcentre.com providing information for students and staff and runs an expanding health promotion/college liaison programme. Responsibilities The post holder is expected to develop, monitor and manage an effective and competent level of holistic nursing care within the health centre. As part of the nursing team they will be accountable for assessment, planning, implementation, auditing and evaluation of nursing practice. The job description includes competencies the post holder would be expected to demonstrate within the first year of employment. Clinical and administrative Responsibility for undertaking and monitoring nursing care delivered within the service using valid evidence-based techniques that maintain and /or improve the health and wellbeing of the practice population. Use of clinical skills must take account of the NMC Guidelines and Codes of Conduct and any Guided Protocol issued by NHS England, the ICB, Department of Health or the practice. Roles may include: New patient screening and health promotion Cervical cytology and follow-up, sexual health and contraceptive consultations including emergency contraception. Health promotion and referral to specialist agencies where required. E.g. student counselling and welfare. Travel advice and immunisation Checking and performing routine immunisation e.g. meningitis C, MMRs and vaccines for students working in clinical areas ECGs ABPM Phlebotomy Assisting in minor operations Assisting in maintaining chronic disease registers Helping to maintain recall systems and perform audits. Ear care advice Responsibility for a healthy, safe and secure workplace by knowing and following the: Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (1995) Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (1985) European H&S Regulations (1992) Responsibility for good communication systems by: Ensuring confidentiality of records taking into account the "Data Protection Act" (1998), "Access to Health Records" (1991), the Health and Social Care Act 2012 and the Caldecott Report and review. By being literate and numerate in all communications. Liaising with administrative staff to deal with any IT problems and inputting information appropriately on computers. Responsibility for resources by: Help with ordering and controlling medical supplies Helping ensure that regular maintenance of medical equipment takes place. Responsibility for quality of nursing service by: Establishing and maintaining appropriate recall systems e.g. smear programmes. Liaising and collaborating with other professional, statutory and voluntary disciplines and groups Pinpointing and making comment on policies, protocols or guidelines that appear to be out-of-date and by discussion with practice team enabling evidence-based changes to be made. Promoting latest research-based practice in line with Clinical Governance. Implementing recognised quality assurance systems. Carrying out agreed audits, writing appropriate reports and making recommendations on findings. Accessing computer based information either on the web or shared databases. Complying with the practice complaints procedure and taking appropriate action. Customer service and teamwork Responsibility to display effective relationships with colleagues within and outside the practice by: Contributing to team meetings and case conferences and attending away days. Working as a team with all staff and understanding and respecting everyone's contribution. Responsibility to communicate effectively and enable service-users to make effective use of resources by: Implementing good "Customer Service Standards", introducing yourself, responding to enquiries promptly etc. Promoting use of interpreters, sign language or translators as needed. Understanding and recognising the Equal Opportunities legislation. Ensuring accidents and incidents are reported Recognising limitations and seeking assistance from others when needed. Responsibility to ensure equality of all co-workers and service-users by: Promoting anti-discriminatory and non-prejudicial practices and behaviours. Promoting individuals' rights, personal beliefs and informed choices, as per the Equality Act 2010, European Convention on Human Rights (enacted through the Human rights Act 1998 in UK), and the Patients Charter. Professional Responsibility to develop own knowledge and expand own practice by: Being aware of and acting in accordance with the NHSE and Patient Group Directives and the practice protocols Ensuring you achieve NMC revalidation requirements by maintaining a continuing professional development portfolio Developing a personal development plan Participating in employer appraisal process Facilitate opportunities for clinical supervision for self and others Attend and complete appropriate training/educational programmes as negotiated through your personal development plan. Professional practice must take account of: The NMC Code of Professional Practice (2002 including updates) and other NMC Guidelines Any guidelines and protocols endorsed by NHSE, CLCCG, Department of Health, or practice. Awareness of own limitations of knowledge and competence and to seek guidance and further training where appropriate. Review of Job description This job description is intended as an outline of the general areas of activity, which the post holder will be expected to participate in. It may be reviewed and amended according to changing needs of the practice. Changes will be undertaken in discussion and agreement with the post holder and the Line Manager in agreement with the GP Partner.
