Faith-Based Charities

There are religious charities representing all major faiths including Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism. Religious charities undertake a large number of campaigns and projects abroad to improve conditions in some of the most vulnerable, poverty-stricken countries in the world.

How can I help?

Spread the word

Religious charities recognise that there is strength in numbers when it comes to helping those in need. For this reason, they often have voluntary speakers and campaign volunteers who visit churches and community groups to encourage people to get involved in community projects either through donations, volunteering or prayer. Volunteer ambassadors also aim to create relationships with local businesses to help them explore how they can help.

Disaster response roles

There are also opportunities to get involved in disaster response roles. For example, Islamic Relief UK train volunteers over a 2 year period to become leaders who can respond to emergencies and disasters in the UK at short notice.

During disasters, it’s usually all hands on deck and people often rely on support from charities to provide aid such as water, blankets and clothing. Your help could go a long way in providing some relief from the devastating impact that disasters can have on communities.

Long after a disaster has happened e.g. the 2015 Nepal earthquake, religious charities will continue to fundraise and help rebuild communities so they can get their lives back on track.

Volunteering abroad

Many religious charities conduct charity work overseas, so there are also opportunities to travel abroad. Hindu charity SEWA offers a ‘Charity Through Adventure’ experience for people that want to take part in demanding challenges and treks, whilst seeing some amazing parts of the world and fundraising for humanitarian causes.

Funds raised through ‘Charity Through Adventure’ have led to an Ambulance Donation in Tanzania and developments in wheelchairs and artificial limbs in Kenya.
