We know that travelling on your own over 60 can be a daunting experience – especially if it’s your first time.

To help give you the confidence to set off on an adventure of a lifetime, we’ve pulled together some tips specifically for solo travellers over 60 – from finding a holiday company you can trust to booking an escorted tour.

1. Find a holiday company you can trust

It might sound obvious, but booking your single’s holiday with confidence is important. Being secure in your decision can help reduce anxiety and worry about your trip – giving you the headspace to enjoy your upcoming adventure fully.

It’s best to do plenty of research and only book with a reputable company that’s a member of the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA). This means that if you run into any issues after you part with your money, the ABTA can help you resolve them.

Using an established business with a proven track record is also a good idea. This means they’ll have the experience needed to deliver singles holidays for over 60s. One of the best ways to get an idea of people’s experiences with travel companies is to check out reviews on websites like Tripadvisor and Which?.

2. Book a package tour

Using a travel agent or booking a complete package for your solo holiday can be a good idea, as you won’t need to worry about what activities or excursions to arrange whilst you’re away.

With a package holiday, your itinerary will be in place before you travel, allowing you to enjoy the experience and make the most of your time away without added stress.

Before choosing a package holiday, though, it’s worth thinking about the type of activities you’d like to do. Do you prefer more outdoorsy and active holidays? Or is exploring museums and sightseeing more your thing? Knowing this before you start your search will help you narrow your options and determine which package is best for you.

3. Invest in some safety products

For most people, safety is the biggest concern when it comes to solo travel. And while there are many ways to help you feel more comfortable while travelling alone, you might want to invest in products like anti-theft messenger bags, personal alarms or whistles, and door-stop alarms, which will alert you if an intruder tries to enter your room.

You might not need to use any of these items. However, simply having them may give you more confidence and peace of mind. You can also share your location with friends and family members through your phone – this article from Wired will show you how.

4. Book with an adults-only operator

Travelling alone can be a wonderful and liberating experience – even more so if you can meet like-minded holidaymakers.

One of the ways you can do this is by booking an adults-only trip, which opens up the possibility of you forming life-lasting friendships with other mature travellers along the way.

5. Bring a book

Although you’ll have the chance to make friends along the way, there are always moments we might like to spend alone – whether to soak in the scenery or spend some quiet time unwinding after a busy day. Bringing a book with you means you can always escape to a different world and never be lonely with nothing to do.

6. If you can, book a holiday with a tour manager

Another way you can help put your mind at ease and give yourself the best chance at a positive solo travelling experience is to book a curated holiday with a tour manager.

Tour managers can help to break the ice and introduce you to the other travellers on your trip. A good tour manager will provide a smiling face and listening ears to answer any questions and assist you when they can. They can also help put you at ease and create a relaxing, fun atmosphere along the way.

Not all holiday tours feature a tour manager (for example, some are self-guided). However, the majority of Just You trips for solo travellers are headed up by a tour manager. So, if this is something you’re interested in, it’s worth taking a look at what they have on offer using the button below.
