Job Description

Supporting adults at a weekly English conversation club. Taking place once a week for 6 weeks.

What will you be doing?

We are looking for volunteers to help adults who are learning English by hosting a weekly 'Conversation Club' to help adults to;

build confidence and skills using English in day-to-day situations

feel championed and empowered

have a safe space to express themselves

Volunteers host and plan weekly small group sessions over 6 weeks, leading conversation for English learners and providing participants with an informal language learning space.

Conversation groups are not formal English classes, volunteers do not need to beprofessional ESOL teachers, however, need to be confident English speakers to lead sessions. We value volunteers who can bring life experience as well as learnt experiences into their volunteering roles, and actively encourage applications from all people, whatever their background and including those who speak English as another language. Please notethis is volunteer role and unpaid.

The Role

  • To lead and plan group sessions that are engaging and appropriate for the learner's level (a toolkit and framework is given however additional resources or planning may be needed)
  • To help participants engage and build confidence during sessions
  • Debrief with co-volunteer following sessions to share with the Programme Coordinator
  • To create a safe, compassionate, and healthy group setting alongside your co volunteer

What are we looking for?

  • Confident English speaker and communicator
  • Experience teaching another language
  • Enjoy meeting people and working alongside people
  • Compassion, empathy, and ability to help people feel at ease in a group setting
  • Ability to be flexible during sessions and follow where participants lead topics
  • Reliability and good time keeping
  • Commitment to safeguarding and ability to keep confidence and boundaries
  • Good local and UK knowledge
  • Experience of supporting others (desirable)
